The Experience

Built in the 1800s, behind imposing gates, this is the last home on the island to retain its decorative fascia. Not only is the house beautiful, it is listed, and your welcoming English hosts are there to greet you. Enter an open-plan living area divided by a central stair, awash with light from generous windows… with polished wood floors, immaculate beams and a chic palette of whites, greys and deep red. Sink into the large corner sofa by the fire; lounge in the decked courtyard garden, spacious, sunny and enclosed. Unless you have tiny tots – note the small pond – this is a perfect place for a family, with the main bedroom on the first floor (bathroom en suite, loo below), two bedrooms on the lower ground floor that share a bathroom, and a harmonious flow throughout. As for the village, it’s off the beaten track and all the more charming for it. There’s a church whose tower can be climbed, two markets, independent shops, tempting restaurants. Surf, sail, stroll to the beach, visit the island’s markets and bring back your spoils – to a kitchen as delightful as the rest.

Reviews

This is a beautiful house tucked away behind a gate in the middle of Ste Marie. The owners met us when we arrived, showed us round and gave useful tips on the area. The weather was terrible so we were very happy to be able to curl up on the sofa in front of the fire in the evenings. Despite the rain we had a great visit to the aquarium in La Rochelle and hired bikes for a day from the nearby rental shop.

We are a family of three and stayed at this property for two weeks. The house has a gorgeous façade, is clean, roomy and comfortable with a lovely atmosphere and a beautiful courtyard to relax in. The village itself is extremely pretty with a local square housing a restaurant, bar/café, takeaway and shops just a 5 minute walk away. A special mention to the property owners, Carole and Mick, who went above and beyond what would be expected to make our visit as stress free and as welcoming as possible, they couldn’t have been any more helpful or easy to deal with. We will definitely visit again!

I visited with 3 friends in September - what a gorgeous place (both la Maison Balneaire and Sainte Maire). It's in a perfect location to access other parts of the island by bike and car. We enjoyed drinks in the courtyard garden and pastries at the local boulangerie. Thanks to Mick who met us and settled us in.

BLISS! Mick and Carole are simply the nicest and most helpful hosts, and they have clearly put a huge amount of thought and effort into creating a home that is a perfect base for a truly memorable holiday.

WHAT A GEM! We could not recommend this gite more highly. In a very quiet, laid back village La Maison Baineaire is the perfect place to kick off your shoes and relax. Situated 5 minutes on a bike from the beach and 3 minutes from the boulangerie and small bar/restaurant, the house is perfect for both adults and older children. Well maintained and nicely decorated, the house has everything you need and the courtyard is perfect to catch a few rays. Two weeks went by very quickly - and we didn't want to come home.

AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS We spent a wonderful week at this stunning house in August. Inside, the house was comfortable & immaculate. The courtyard is so relaxing & my son enjoyed spotting lizards, while we soaked up the sun & the atmosphere. The village is peaceful but has everything you need. We ate at the local restaurant several times & also shopped at the deli. I would definitely recommend this lovely house!

Local points of interest from Mick Williams

  • Treat yourselves to a relaxing spa day and dinner at the renowned Thalassotherapy centre at Ste Marie, just a 15 minute walk from the house!
  • All the villages on the Ile de Ré have their own special character and are all worth a visit, but don't miss the beautiful, chic port of St Martin, the medieval market at La Flotte; and Ars en Ré, voted one of the prettiest villages in France!
  • Take advantage of the 100 kms of cycle lanes which join all the villages and beaches - a wonderful way to see the island; stop off for an oyster 'degustation' at the many oyster shacks on the way, and cycle through the salt fields of Loix.
  • Climb the lighthouse at St Clements (La Phare) and see the stunning views. The staircase alone is worth the visit... like a perfect snail's shell! Visit the museum and discover how life on the island used to be, and browse the gift shop.
  • You can enjoy a wide variety of water sports on the island... sailing, surfing, kite and wind surfing, paddle surfing, fishing... lesson and tour information provided at the house.
  • Climb the local church at Ste Marie de Ré with the tourist office, and learn about the history of the town, the occupation and air battles... and the leper colony!
