The Experience

A light-filled ‘maison de maître’, minutes from the mighty Gironde. Built in the 1870s, it lies on the edge of a very small village (church, bakery, one of the best restaurants in the area) surrounded by sunflowers and vines.

Immaculate rooms flow from one to the other, and the hallway is nothing if not grand. Bedroom suites on the first floor are huge, and the rooms under the eaves are charming. Start your morning with a gourmet continental breakfast, in the garden if it’s sunny, of breads, pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, ham, cheese and yogurts.

Discover the many lovely Atlantic beaches nearby, or the streets of Talmont-sur-Gironde, one of the prettiest estuary villages in France. Another must is a tour of the cognac houses, so start with riverside Hennessy’s – you’ll never think of cognac in the same way again. Come home to a glass of the local famous Pineau under the pine trees, and swims in the big beautiful pool.

We had a wonderful warm welcome at Le Logis d'Epargnes and really recommend it to everyone. Sharon and Phil Hobson are charming hosts and their home is the perfect place for a few days in the French vineyards, from where to venture out to taste some excellent cognacs and claret wines. It is also within an hour's drive to both La Rochelle and Bordeaux, both worthy of day trips, although... it is tempting to just stay at the Logis and relax!

We stayed at the logis d’Epargnes as a group of friends. After a magnificent renovation, Le Logis is a lovely place to stay; Phil and Sharon welcomed us warmly. Large en suite rooms, spotlessly clean modern bathrooms and wide comfortable beds were great. The breakfast was excellent. Sadly as it was winter, we were not able to enjoy the large grounds or the pool so will have to return in Summer. Epargnes village also boasts an excellent restaurant where we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Highly recommended

We returned to Le Logis d'Epargne a few weeks ago for our second visit since Phil and Sharon opened the property last spring. The house is marvelous, perfectly decorated, and with a large pool and garden, and the hosts are warm and welcoming. Within an easy walk is a fabulous gourmet restaurant, Le Presbytère, that is worth more than one visit during any vacation. The village itself is tiny and surrounded by the peace and quiet of the Charente-Maritime countryside. We will be back for a third visit very soon.

This fine old Maison de Maître is a perfect base for exploring the vineyards of Cognac and, if you pop on a ferry to cross the Gironde estuary, the vineyards of the Medoc. The owners are a delightful couple, brimming with enthusiasm and love for life.

My wife and I spent 4 very enjoyable days at this B+B. It is located in a quiet village within easy reach of the coast and very nice beaches, e.g. St-George-de-Didonne. There are many interesting towns, villages and islands to visit in the nearby vicinity. Sharon and Phil, the owners, will certainly make you feel welcome and help to meet all your needs, proving useful information and tips, as well as, an excellent continental breakfast. For hot sunny days there is also a very nice pool in the garden. All in all we had a very enjoyable time!

Wayne, Segny

Beautiful setting, tasteful decoration, lovely garden with pool, thoughtful, friendly hosts. We were guests in Sharon and Phil's very successful B&B in Torquay, Devon. Their new place in Epargnes, France - amongst the picturesque vineyards - is just as wonderful! Fitting for either a romantic get-a-way for two or for extended-family holidays.

Patricia, Thoiry

We had a wonderful long weekend here in this beautiful house in the Charente Maritime. We were very warmly received by Phil and Sharon who did everything to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The decor is gorgeous and the bed was very comfortable, bathrooms sparklingly clean. Too early in the year to enjoy the pool in the lovely gardens, we did enjoy walks through the local vinyards. We would thoroughly recommend this B&B.

Sandra, Taunton

Great stay and great location! Clean, quiet, spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated accommodation with loads of charm. Location perfect for trips to local wineries. St Emilion, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Cognac approx an hour drive. Looking forward to a return visit to enjoy more local trips, the pool, the nearby local beaches and Le Presbytere restaurant across the road, which is great

The neighbourhood

In an area dominated by the Gironde, the house lies by the peaceful village of Epargnes, with a few dozen houses and a rather fine restaurant, Le Presbytère. Close to the mouth of the estuary is the fishing village Meschers and the sandy Plage des Nonnes (15km). Walks and cycle rides through vineyards start right from the door. Follow the clifftop path to the beach at St-Georges-de-Didonne and spot the typical fishing huts on stilts, or carrelets. Or hire a cycle guide for a customised bike tour.

Local points of interest from Phil & Sharon Hobson

  • You'll be staying in an historic Manor House built in the 19th century and which was an important part of village life, with a bakery in one of the outhouses. A warm atmosphere prevails and the Travel Lounge is a great place to relax, perhaps with a cognac
  • Pull back the curtains in the morning and gaze across the beautiful vineyards whose grapes are used to make Cognac; cycle or walk amongst them, and pop in to one of the local producers to taste their wines, Cognacs and Charentaise speciality Pineau.
  • Jump in the car and in 15 mins you'll be sitting on soft golden sand or sipping wine in a cafe on one of the Atlantic beaches. Plages des Nonnes is one of our favourites, and you'll love the big beaches of Grand Cote & Cote Sauvage. Visit a lighthouse....
  • As the warm breeze rustles the leaves of the fig trees and stone pines, read your book or doze in the shade beside the pool, then dive in to cool off before an afternoon "Apero" on the lawn. Play table tennis in the garden or petanque in the boulodrome.
  • If you love seafood, you'll love the restaurants in the area; famous for Oysters grown locally. Walk across to one of the best restaurants 50m from the front door. Enjoy Pineau, the local speciality drink and wine taste at one of 3 village wineries.
  • Kayaking both locally & at Mornac, cycling along the paths in the vineyards outside the Manor and along the promenade at St Georges and Royan are some of the activities. Visit Cognac, Saintes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Re & Oleron Islands, Mornac & the Medoc.
