The Experience

Everyone falls in love with the village of Le Bois, its beaches, its dunes and its market. And you’ll love this immaculate cottage in the oldest quarter of the village – just a short walk to the high street shops. Once part of an old farm, it’s a 1900s cottage that’s been beautifully converted by owners Peggy and Steve, combining French country chic with understated charm. You enter an open-plan living space: new stone floor, beams painted pale grey, two elegant sofas, a simple stone fireplace. There are books, games and every latest thing, from iPod dock and digital TV to a tip-top bath, a deluge shower, a blender, dishwasher and Nespresso machine. On warm days you can spill into the little courtyard, fire up the barbecue, loll on striped sofas. The owners have thought of everything. Cycle your hearts out – through vineyards, past oyster beds, to beaches. Sail, surf and kitesurf (teens love). Drop into stylish Saint Martin for evening ice creams, get to know the bistros in the village. Then back to bedrooms that spoil: muted and silvery tones, luminous furniture, rich fabrics, seagrass under foot.

Perfect holiday home for us and our 2 almost teenage children, very clean and tidy, beautifully decorated rooms, excellent showers, lots of useful information supplied by Peggy. We loved relaxing in the peaceful courtyard. Central location on island; it was so easy to cycle to the beaches/markets/shops and other villages."

Jenny, Birmingham

I just wanted to drop you a line to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Les Voiles. We thought the house was perfect and you had thought of everything to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We also really appreciated everything you did to sort out transport and a restaurant booking ( even for the week when we were not staying in your property, which is most definitely beyond the call of duty!) We loved the house, the village and your recommendations of places to eat. L’Ocean is now a favourite of ours on the island too!

Stephanie, Bristol

Just wanting to say a big ’Thank you’ for all the care and attention you have clearly put into your lovely home on the Ile de Re. We had a super week of rest and relaxation and much enjoyed cycling around the island on the designated tracks and shopping in the market for such fresh produce to cook. Mitch Tonks was a great help with inspiration for the amazing fish we bought(more than once!!) too. Your recommendations were excellent from bicycle hire shop to the amazing L’Ecailler in la Flotte which we particularly enjoyed as our end of week treat on the Friday

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Peggy Connor

  • Care-free relaxation is our aim for guests at Les Voiles: we have an English-speaking housekeeper to greet you; we can organise a transfer from the airport/train station; book a restaurant for your first night; arrange a babysitter, even line up a spa day!
  • Le Bois is a foody heaven: great restaurants and bars from stylish 'L'Océan' to cool vibe 'Les Q Salés', as well as the fab traiteurs and deli stalls in the market. We even have our own 'AOP' potatoes, celebrated in a festival on the first Sunday in May!
  • A leisurely stroll from our house on safe paths through sunny parkland is the glorious sandy expanse of 'Gros Jonc' beach. Join the surfin' dudes boogie boarding, play beach pétanque or just stretch out, soak up the rays and chill...
  • The village is bursting with Ile de Ré charm: traditional white-washed houses; winding, flower-lined lanes and at its heart the lively town square with artisan shops and the island's best indoor and outdoor market, open every day, all year round.
  • Abandon your car, hire bikes and explore the ten villages on the flat cycle paths. From Les Voiles you are an easy ride away from the brocantes and art galleries of Ars or a spot of retail therapy in the chic boutiques on the quayside of Saint Martin.
  • Nature lovers will adore the salt marshes where a variety of waterfowl and birds of prey are to be found. The flat-bottomed boats, the salt-gatherers' huts, the oyster beds and the wild moorland give the Ile de Ré a romantic beauty all its own.
