The Experience

There’s airy grandeur in this former hunting lodge, where tall windows let light flood in and Juliette balconies add romance. For a grown-up house party there are guest sitting rooms for gatherings and 12 acres of grounds to roam. Ask for a picnic, find a peaceful spot by a lake and borrow a blanket for a shady siesta.

The pool, tennis and fishing are right here and you can eat or shop in local market towns. The Marais Poitevin regional park is a green and watery wonderland of small canals and marshes ripe for exploring by punt, bike or on foot.

For harbours and beaches, La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré are half an hour’s drive; exceptional 12th century churches and the ruined abbey of Maillezais are on hand too.

The best place we stayed during our whole trip! The setting is idyllic, with the manoir in it's own park, and the building itself is beautifully furnished. Michael & Ben are wonderful hosts and we felt truly cared for while there!

Michael & Ben are the perfect hosts. A magical place you have created for guests to enjoy. It’s amazing what you have done here to find, purchase, renovate and run, just the two of you, this piece of paradise in such a short space of time. Making everyone welcome. Achieving a very high standard for those who seek the romance of the French countryside and fine cuisine. The house sits in beautiful parkland. We stayed for a week. Each spacious room having spectacular views across the park. A great place to relax. Ben is a great chef and evenings spent having a leisurely meal. Will return.

We had a wonderful stay at Manoir de Plaisance with Ben and Michael as delightful hosts (and Ben is also a star in the kitchen). The Manor House has been sympathetically and stylishly renovated and sits in lovely grounds with lakes, a saltwater swimming pool and tennis to keep you entertained. We enjoyed a delicious supper on our stay and breakfast was of equal high standard, with lots of regional and personal touches woven into the menu (Ben's Mum's Pineau made an excellent aperitif). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be making plans to return again soon, we'd highly recommend it.

Ben, Chester

We loved everything about the Manoir de Plaisance, from its smart decor to the impeccable service we received. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed, with a king size bed fitted with quality linen, and a sparkling bathroom with Molten Brown toiletries. We especially liked the drawing room with its bar, a peaceful place to retreat after a busy day and unwind. Breakfast was perfect like everything else, with in-house freshly baked brioche etc, and attentive service. Its very private setting in large grounds with mature trees adds to the overall ambience. We will definitely return!

The neighbourhood

A few kilometres of pretty country lanes, lined with hedges and among a patchwork of fields, lead to the manoir - it's peaceful walking or cycling country. There are no neighbours here, and the nearest small village is Benon, three km away. A bit further are Courçon and Vouhé, quietish towns with a few shops and restaurants. Beautiful La Rochelle and medieval fortress town Niort are each half an hour by car; the watery charms of the Marais Poitevin, known as 'Green Venice', are close by.

Local points of interest from Michael & Benjamin Hudson-Hamilton

  • The vibrant Maritime city of La Rochelle is just 30mins drive, with a picturesque old port and historic centre of narrow streets and medieval & Renaissance houses.
  • From La Rochelle a 3km long bridge takes you to the îlé de Ré - a beautiful island surrounded by sandy beaches. Head to St Martin de Rè for picture postcard streets adorned with hollyhocks as well as a busy harbour lined with cafés and restaurants
  • Also 30mins drive from us is the historic town of Niort. The Donjon is a must-visit, on the river bank it is part of a medieval castle with parts dating back to the 12th Century.
  • Picnic hampers full of regional produce are available daily to be enjoyed in the grounds at Plaisance. There are many tables dotted around the park, or take the picnic blanket find your own perfect spot among our 12 acres of parkland.
  • Head North from Plaisance to explore the Marais Poitevin (‘Green Venice’) a large area of marshland crossed by rivers and canals. Rent a boat and take to the waters yourself! Don’t miss the Abbaye de Maillezais or the beautiful village of Coulon.
  • Just 10mins by car is the pretty town of Surgères, where there are regular markets as well as a stunning Romanesque Church.

Michael & Benjamin Hudson-Hamilton

Charming English owners Ben and Michael met when working in the hotel industry in Bath, and later moved here to renovate this beautiful manor house. For years they had been buying antiques in French flea markets, and were delighted to find a home for all their treasures. For Ben, moving here was coming home as he grew up in France with his parents running a B&B, and he trained as a chef in La Rochelle.
