The Experience

This beautifully renovated cottage is one of three properties – the others self-catering – but each is far enough away from the others that you’ll feel very private.

Marian and Barry live in an apartment at the back of the house – they’re lovely hosts with a great sense of humour. Make yourself at home in the elegant living room furnished with carefully chosen antiques or relax on the sunny front terrace with an aperitif. Wake up to a breakfast of granola, seasonal fruit and compote, fresh pastries and hot chocolate.

You’re in the middle of a quiet hamlet with woodland walks on your doorstep and can stroll to the nearest village, Cercoux, in half an hour for dinner at the Auberge – spot boar and deer along the way. Take a picnic to the swimming lake and sandy beach at Montguyon, a 10-minute drive, or go on a day trip to the wine towns of Saint-Émilion, 40 minutes away, or Bordeaux, just under an hour.

Accommodation

Reviews

Marian and Barry create the most stylish and welcoming places to stay. To now have the added extra of bed and breakfast at their heavenly corner of France is a huge bonus. Perfectly situated for a quick stop off en route to the South but far enough into the countryside to be able to relax and know the car, belongings and family are safe and sound for the night!

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottages are set on a quiet lane surrounded by open fields and forests, with just one quiet French neighbour in the adjoining house and a few more cottages along the lane. There are simple restaurants, shops and a Sunday market in Cercoux, a 5-minute drive and Montguyon, a historic village 10 minutes away, with cobbled streets and the ruins of an ancient fort. The larger town of Libourne is 30km away and has good markets several times a week; Bordeaux is an hour south.

Local points of interest from Marian Sanders

  • Walk through the woods to the boulangerie in Cercoux to buy fresh bread and glorious tarts and gateaux. We now have an excellent Auberge in Cercoux for coffees, lunches and dinners. Just a three minute drive or a twenty minute walk.
  • Moreau is a great place to stop off for a restful night or more if you are en your way to South West France and North West Spain . We are just 10 minutes from the N10 and A10.
  • One of the best markets in France is at Libourne on a Sunday morning, in the indoor market you will be dazzled by the array of cheeses and fish, breathtaking, don't be late, it is all over at noon!
  • See the Stars! In this unspoilt part of France there is no light pollution, sit back on the terrace in the evening and watch the stars, simply magical! You can also see the satellites as they circle the earth.
  • Visit the exquisite town of St Emilion, walk through the cobbled medieval streets and have lunch in one of the many restaurants, this unesco world heritage site, famous for it's wine is one of the most beautiful places in France.
  • Finally, take a day away from the peace of Moreau and visit Bordeaux, second only to Paris for architectural beauty and charm, it is only a 45minutes drive but you can also take the train from Coutras, you will want to return again and again.

Introducing

Marian Sanders

Barry and Marian have lived on and off in France for nearly 30 years while running their antiques business and have rented out their self-catering properties in Moreau since 1991. They are very hard-working and constantly improving what they offer to guests. Barry is practical and down to earth and builds, fixes up and repairs – he restored all the cottages himself – and Marian adds artistic flair and comfortable touches.
