The Experience

Joined by a bridge to the mainland, a hop from La Rochelle, is the small sunny island where the beautiful people go. Down a peaceful backstreet in the sleepy town of Ars is a whitewashed former fisherman’s cottage, a little house of surprises. Step into the kitchen/diner, simple and well-equipped with oak worktops, white crockery, yellow cookware, a Nespresso machine. The sitting room too is in understated Ile-de-Re style: wood-clad walls and seascape colours, squishy linen sofa and open fire, textured rugs and quirky brocante finds. Then it’s up the narrow painted staircase to two bedrooms panelled in barely-there-pink, with cream carpets, white bedspreads and white curtains at south-facing windows. Pllows, quilts and mattresses are new; linen you hire (or bring your own). No garden but no worry: the island is bliss for bike rides from village to village – or dune-beach to dune-beach (the longest stretch for two miles) – and charming, cobbled St Martin is a French celeb-spotter’s paradise. Cool off at a quayside café, with a plate of oysters or a glass of the local microbrew.

Reviews

The cottage is charming and perfectly appointed. Centrally located it is an ideal base for cycling around the island, swimming and sampling some of the delicious local seafood and wine. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough. We’ll be back!

Wonderful play to stay - having travelled all over Ile de Re, Ars definitely our favourite place to be and the house is a fantastic location just a couple of minutes from the main square. House itself is great - all you need and very tastefully decorated. You can tell someone has loved the house - lots of thoughtful touches. Would definitely return.

Ruth, Tetbury

Fantastic little house with everything you need - plus tastefully decorated, good powerful shower and really comfy beds. The house is located in a lovely town and it’s easy access to the supermarket and lots of nice places to eat and drink. Was a magical place to stay with children - ice cream, crepes, bike rides and donkeys that wear pyjamas!!!! We hope to return to create more happy holiday memories...

Beautiful little cottage - tastefully decorated and well equipped. In centre of Ars en Re, a very pretty village with a great daily food market, lovely restaurants, cafes, shops, village square etc. Perfect location to explore rest of island by bike or by car. We had an excellent week and would visit again. Bini (owner) was helpful, responsive and suggested places. Managing agent v good too.

Excellent accommodation. Excellent location. Would highly recommend staying.

Mistlin, Surrey

Lovely house. Lovely location. Well equipped and very comfortable. Very peaceful but with plenty to do and great places to eat. Take bicycles and abandon the car.

Alan, Guildford

The property is charming, simply furnished, and brilliantly located for the gorgeous beach, shops and restaurants. We stayed as a family with our daughters aged 10 and 8, and the house was the perfect size. There are so few cars on the island that we were happy to let the children play outside and we could get anywhere on our bikes. Bliss! Would love to return.
