Brave the swing over the lake or stroll the lawns and admire the herd: Mike is the proud owner of 40 Belted Galloways. This 12th-century stronghold in old Poitou sits in 105 hectares of woods and fields – that’s what you see when you open your shutters in the morning.

Medieval doors and carved archways remain but the feel is fairly minimalist. A vast awning over the courtyard extends outdoor eating hours, three separate sitting rooms mean you can spread out and there’s a sunken (small) pool for cooling off if you don’t fancy the lake.

Breakfast is a gourmet affair including ham, cheese, eggs, fruits and pastries. Resident chef, Joss, creates exceptional dinners too using seasonal local ingredients, home-grown veg and sometimes home beef; he runs cookery classes as well. Explore the rolling countryside on vespas or bikes. Pop into Montmoreau St Cybard (8km) for its weekly market; sample Napoleon’s favourite cognac in Jarnac (40km).

The neighbourhood

The chateau lies between the market towns of Montmoreau St Cybard and Blanzac-Porcheresse (both 8km) where cycling routes abound; there are two circular routes starting at Montmoreau. You can reach lots of lovely places in 45 minutes by car, so canoe down the river in Jarnac; catch a river boat in Angouleme; and make a bee-line for Pineau Francois 1er in Chateauneuf: they are the finest producers of pineau (distant cousin of cognac) in the Charente.

Local points of interest from Mike Rowe

  • Envie d'espace? Need space? This is the place! 105 hectares (yes, 259 acres!) of land will give you that feeling of freedom. Retreat to your own space, inside or out, read a book, meditate, get lost, chill and relax. Find each other again at dinner time.
  • Head to the medieval village of Villebois Lavalette on Saturday morning market day and do as the locals do, buy some fresh oysters accompanied by a 'vin blanc', naturellement.
  • You're in good company; the hosts are delighted to offer food from home grown produce and that includes the chateau's beef from their own herd of belted Galloway cattle. Fresh produce means: give the chef 24hr notice for lunch or dinner.
  • Get up at your leisure and savour divine scrambled eggs prepared by chef Joss.
  • Magical quiet nights under unpolluted clear skies, where heaven meets the earth.
  • Wander over to the lake with Tipi's, enjoy some wild swimming.. this is nature at it's best.

Mike Rowe

The castle was in the same family for centuries until owner Roel and Mic, dentists from Antwerp, arrived in 2011. In 2019 they will be moving in permanently to help with running of both the farm and the B&B. Roel is the creative force behind the interiors and has made some of the furniture himself; Mic's passion are the rare-breed cattle. Joss is manager and chef. They are warm hosts and sometimes organise weddings - hence the tipis by the lake.
