The Experience

There’s a rustic farmhouse feel to this converted 18th-century water mill surrounded by acres of field and woodland, and a river runs gently through the garden and under the house. You’re down a winding lane off the main road with only one neighbour so you’ll have the place all to yourselves.

Outdoors you can gather for meals, play board games or settle with a book on the shaded back patio; fire up the barbecue for al fresco dining; go wild swimming in the river or for a picnic in the woods. Kids will love the treehouses and trampoline.

Find a welcome hamper with wine, bread and cheese and plenty of logs for the wood-burner, borrow bikes for expeditions to nearby towns, or drive to shops, markets and restaurants in five minutes.

Nature lovers will be spoilt here as the property offers you great outdoor space. Although the area is still relatively undiscovered by tourists there is plenty to see and do. Go horse riding, canoeing, fishing, walking, cycling, outdoor swimming all within 30 mins. Visit local distilleries for tastings, admire the architecture in places like Angouleme & Limoges, pop into one of the many museums around, visit the Valley of the monkeys.

We had a lovely time at this superb house, which is an old mill. We were 3 couples and 6 children. The house is perfect for families or groups and it is really well equipped: a big lawn, covered patio, big garden, the river for dipping your toes in, and loads of games for the children and adults alike. The bedrooms are beautiful, with very good linen. Thank you to Claire and Tom who were always very attentive. A bientôt!

The neighbourhood

This is a rural spot between two small villages. You can cycle down an old railway track to reach Nanteuil-en-Vallée in about 20 minutes (or drive in five); here you’ll find lovely stone houses, an abbey, and a couple of good restaurants. For a boulangerie, supermarket and petrol station, drive to Champagne Mouton in about five minutes. The nearest large town is Ruffec, 20km away, which has a market on Wednesday and Saturday - look out for local honey melons and goat’s cheese - plus shops and a train station. Local activities within 30 minutes’ drive include horse riding, canoeing, fishing, walking, cycling and outdoor swimming.

Local points of interest from Tom Harvey

  • Field kitchen for large barbecues and outdoor entertaining. Open fire cooking in seasons when fires are allowed. Have a big family cook-out and dine under the stars with woods and treehouses nearby. Sit and watch the sunset as the kids roast marshmallows.
  • Wild swimming in the leet when levels are high and cool paddling and splashing around in the river in summer when the levels are lower. We love swimming in the Charente at Condac, diving off the weir into the deep cool river and riding the water shoot.
  • The large terrace at the mill is a hub to eat, read books, watch the kids play croquet or badminton or just soak up the sun. At night it's the best star gazing spot and you can watch the meteors in the night sky. The centre of activity day and night.
  • The surrounding roads and trails make for great walking and cycling. We have some old bikes if you just want a meander down the lanes to pick up the morning croissant or dine in Nanteuil. Or bring your road bikes and garmin for miles of empty road cycling.
  • There are many informal seats and rough cut paths around the grounds, so it's great for a quiet stroll watching out for butterflies, moths, coypu, deer and, if your lucky, the baby wild boar.
  • Wonderful food from the local markets at Civray (Tue/Fri) Ruffec (Wed/Sat) and Champagne Mouton (Tue/Fri). The best ingredients for your wild cooking or let someone else do the work and eat at the great restaurants in Nanteuil, Condac and Civray.

Claire and Tom live in London. They took over Le Moulin from Claire’s parents, so it’s been in the family for many years. They are very passionate about nature and spending time outdoors, and love spending time here when they can and sharing it with others.
