The Experience

This light, modern loft apartment above a converted mill has a privileged spot on the Charente riverside, yet is minutes from shops, restaurants and markets in historic Jarnac.

It’s tranquil here, with large windows to let in the lovely views. Discover a generous welcome basket left for you by Christine, and lean over the balcony with an espresso or cognac – what else! – and see swans glide, boaters work the lock, fishermen flick rods and lines.

There are lots of things to do: canoeing, boating, a cognac or wine-tasting tour, explore Bordeaux or the Côte Sauvage. Or just potter in Jarnac (birthplace of François Mitterand) with its restaurants and Cognac Houses – or simply sit back and watch the endlessly fascinating scenery flowing quietly beneath your window.

Reviews

We are two well travelled, active seniors from Canada who stumbled upon this property through the always reliable Sawday's website. We had no idea where Jarnac was, we just liked the pictures on the website. We were in France for a month and decided to stay here for a week. This property is a spectacular old mill that has been completely refurbished with style. It is perched in the middle of a river with views all around. It is completely private and you feel like royalty looking down at all the activity on the river. The location is perfect. We could walk to the center of the village.

Fabulous accommodation, could not fault it. Everything we needed, very well equipped. Helpful information on arrival. Great for visiting Jarnac and Cognac. I am sure we shall return

This is a great place to stay - really comfortable and stylish accommodation, beautiful location, very friendly and helpful owners. We would not hesitate to recommend Quai 3 and hope very much to return for a longer holiday. We didn't have the best weather while we were in Jarnac, but it didn't really matter as Quai 3 was such a relaxing place to be.

We had a wonderful stay. We arrived late and hungry after a long journey but our host had made arrangements for us to be shown around our well appointed apartment. We then had the best pizza ever just over the river and a lovely breakfast was left for the following morning. The apartment is decorated with a feeling of simple luxury and is in a beautiful setting overlooking the river, sipping a glass of wine watching the boats go through the locks we felt like movie stars! Our 7 year old loved having the mezzanine level to herself which also meant she got to stay up as late as the adults.

Janine

We have just returned from our second stay at this wonderful accommodation. The beds are luxurious, kitchen and living area are exceptionally well appointed and overlook the Charente river and the lock. It is an ongoing entertainment to watch the boaters traverse the lock. Chris is very friendly, helpful and welcoming and provides lots of local information. We used the loft as a base for some easy cycling - there are lots of circuits through scenic countryside as well as some more challenging routes. The area is excellent for walking, boating and canoeing.. We can't wait for our next visit!

Location

The neighbourhood

The centre of Jarnac is less than five minutes’ walk from the apartment, and larger shops are 5-10 minutes’ drive away. A visit to one of the many Cognac Houses to sample this world-famous drink is a must in this area, as is a tour of the wine region of Bordeaux. The beautiful Atlantic coast and its Côte Sauvage is about an hour away; La Palmyre (1.5 hrs) is home to one of the best zoos in Europe and there are many chateaux and ancient churches dotted around the area. La Rochelle and its historic port, seafood restaurants and cobbled shopping lanes are 1.5 hours away.

Local points of interest from Christine Hosteing

  • Heart of the Cognac vignes. Many renowned and family Cognac distilleries to visit.
  • The Atlantic coast is only 1hr's drive. La Rochelle and Ile de Ré 1h30 drive. The beautiful town of Bordeaux also 1h30 drive.
