The Experience

This hamlet of six houses in a green farming valley is home to Richard’s tiny shop of delicious preserves, and his three great-value gites. Maison Maurice and the Goat Shed are the smallest: charming, cosy, and heaped with special touches, from Italian showers to oyster knives.

Richard welcomes you with a bottle of something local and fresh eggs from ‘the girls’. Outside, a hot tub waits under a bamboo roof, the raised heated pool glistens under the sun, and deckchairs and benches are scattered about.

It may seem remote but civilisation lies minutes away. St Loup sur Thouet, 5km, is a jewel of a town, while Parthenay, 18km, has a sizeable market. Walking and cycling paths start from the gate – and Richard has bikes for all. Come back to enjoy his seasonal and homegrown four-course dinners – he’s a fantastic chef. Don’t miss the platters of charcuterie and cheese, as well as breakfasts of fresh pastries and homemade bread too.

Reviews

A perfect stay in the French country with a great chef Coq. Thank you so much Richard for all of your lovely attentions. We love you and 'll be back soon

Eloot, Bruxelles

Unpretentious but wonderful. This is a great spot to get away from it all but at the same time enjoy being looked after by Richard who has thought of everything to keep his guests happy. I loved the outdoor sitting room and would like to catch up on my reading there, looking out across the fields or explore the countryside via the lovely walkways.

Our favourite holiday destination! It is a rural delight with everything a family needs for a truly relaxing holiday. Richard is a 5* host even providing the most delicious meals. We've been lucky enough to stay in all of the cottages which have been lovingly restored to a high standard with every mod con you need including excellent Wi-Fi and comfy beds. The swimming pool and hot tub are shared but this has always been a bonus especially for the kids to have other children to play with! The local countryside is perfect for walking (stepping stones!), cycling and kayaking. A must visit!

Lyn, Lichfield

What a perfect slice of heaven A Bois Mort is. It’s not only set in the loveliest countryside, filled with rolling fields and farms, but the owner Richard and his incredible cooking is beyond! Every night felt like we were eating in a Michelin star restaurant. This was an escape that I can’t wait to do again. It was unique, so personal and everyone in the family wants to go back to experience some more magic!

Clare, London

Excellent, fun, pleasant atmosphere. Certainly because of the environment, the accommodation, cleanliness, but especially because of the host who is top. Excellent kitchen too.

Didier, Torhout

Location

The neighbourhood

Large trees stand in the fields that surround the hamlet; no sound except for the clucking hens and occasional passing tractor. Turn left at the gate and you can hike along a piece of the Compostela, before descending to the river Thouet. Gourgé, 4km, is the nearest village, with a shop, a bakery and a small restaurant - Le Petit Marmite. The medieval town of St Loup sur Thouet, a ten-minute drive, is a must for its château alone and was the inspiration behind 'Puss in Boots'.

Local points of interest from Richard Smith

  • Ideally situated in the Poitou Charente, Bois Mort Farm is based in a beautiful farming hamlet, perfectly located for touring and exploring this little-known part of France, and all it has to offer!
  • We are also ideally situated for exploring the wine routes of the Haute Poitou and the Loire Valley. Keen cyclists and walkers will be spoiled by the many routes on offer, including a Petit Chemin de Saint Jacque de Compostelle - right outside your door!
  • In the summer expect sunflower fields, swaying golden wheat and tall lush fields of maize.
  • Bois Mort Farm is close to two beautiful villages, Gourgé with its Romanesque church, beautiful ancient roman bridge and old water mill, where you can fish and picnic – it’s also possible to hire horse drawn gypsy caravans in the summer.
  • Within Gourge there is a small store and La Petit Marmite – a local auberge where your guaranteed of a warm welcome and delicious meal from Valerie and Patou!
  • In the opposite direction lies the medieval village of St Loup Sur Thouet, a ‘Petit Cite de Character’, and the first plus beau village in the Deux Sevres. It has bars, restaurant, auberge, baker, newsagent / bar tabac and village store.

Introducing

Richard Smith

Richard lives with his partner and two cats at the top of the hamlet. He is an exceptionally kind host, with a passion for food and wine. Originally from a Scottish fishing village, he worked in hospitality for 35 years - his idea of heaven is to wander down to the vegetable garden and to cook what he finds.
