The Experience

It’s very quiet here, so when you’re in that cat-like trance by the swimming pool you’ll hear only the sound of birdsong and the odd tractor passing by – you’re next to a working vineyard. Owner Andy serves you a classic continental breakfast in the kitchen or outside on the terrace: breads and pastries from the local boulangerie, fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs and homemade jams. You can stay in for delicious dinners too.

The sitting room is large and light-filled, there are books to read, board games to play and a study for workaholics – even a printer. Wander the gardens, admire the lawns and lovely herbaceous borders, float in the pool or wood-fired hot tub, play table tennis or simply flop in the shade of a mature tree. Retire upstairs to very comfortable bedrooms with views over the garden.

There are dozens of good walks through the endless vines, punctuated by the odd field of sunflowers and many little copses.

Andy is a chef, so dinners here after a long day exploring the vineyards, villages and coast would be a real treat! The bedrooms are large and comfortable and the common areas are so huge and welcoming that you will be inspired to return with a bunch of friends and take one of Andy's cooking courses.

The neighbourhood

The vines of Pineau des Charentes and Cognac are on your doorstep but dedicated wine lovers can do a tour of the wines of Bordeaux - Médoc across the river if you take the ferry at Royan (40 mins) or St Emilion (one hour by car). The beautiful island of Oléron is one hour away, with beaches and superb fish restaurants. You can also rent yachts and sea kayaks. Bordeaux is a day trip and well worth it.

Local points of interest from Clare & Andy Stickings

  • Enjoy a trip to Cognac, just 45 minutes away, where you can enjoy lunch by the river or visit the famous names such as Hennessy, Remy Martin or Baron Otard for a tour and tasting.
  • For the vineyards, you can take a trip to a local vineyard or more well known, St Emilion (70 minutes) to discover their famous wines, or a trip down to see the Citadel at Blaye, across on the ferry to travel through famous vineyards of Medoc or Paulliac
  • It is easy to get to the local ports of the Gironde, have lunch by the boats or travel further up the coast towards Royan, just 40 minutes, in time for breakfast in one of the cafés opposite the beach, borrow a couple of our beach chairs and enjoy..
  • From Royan you can also take a short ferry crossing over to the spectacular beaches of the cote sauvage, or alternatively come back down the coast and stop off at the beautiful village of Talmont (its like a French Clovelly!) for a spot of lunch or dinner
  • For a bit of culture, the beautiful city of Bordeaux is just 60km away, and a tour around the city will soon allow you to grow an appreciation for the beautifully restored historical buildings, the shops and the many restaurants

Clare & Andy Stickings

Clare and Andy moved here from the UK in 2016 to renovate this property completely. Andy is a chef: his cooking is modern and international using local ingredients - fresh fish from Oléron, coq au vin with herbs from the garden and local market seasonal produce. They know this area well, so do ask for their advice about walking routes, wine tours and places to eat.
