The
Experience

The unpretentious stone manor sits high up on the hillside looking down over a vast landscape of arable farmland with the wooded valley of the Vienne in the distance: a large wood protects the house from the north. Wind up a pretty driveway through mature trees, then all opens out and you arrive at the east wing. Very charming.  The house has been in Françoise’s family for ever (she grew up here) and she and Patrick tend it with loving care, as they do their guests. Period elegance drifts through the bedrooms, named after four great grandmothers: three in the main building with canopied beds, parquet floors and antiques, and a family suite on the top floor of the west wing which has more of a contemporary feel with fresh white painted walls. Serenity reigns supreme; breakfast (continental with homemade jams) is served in the old music room, on good porcelain – fresh flowers sit on the marble mantelpiece. Wander the grassy, natural garden to find a good spot for reading, or join your hosts for an aperitif on the balustraded terrace or under the spreading lime tree. If houses could sing, this one surely would.

Reviews

a most warm welcome from Francoise and Patrick after a day's journey; a quiet drink in the grounds, a beautiful, homely room and a convivial breakfast. One couldn't ask for more. The most memorable stop on our 3-week stay in France! - we'll definitley go again.

Mary

This is the most perfect stopover and a longer stay would be even better. Rooms are superb and the welcome wonderful. The breakfast room is beautiful - the most idyllic experience

Sue

An ideal journey break from Normandy to the south or for exploring the Loire. The chateau is attractive and well landscaped with superb views. Its rooms and grounds are elegant, attractive and welcoming - as are its owners. Patrick, Francoise and assistant Carolina were perfect hosts, the rooms were spacious, tastefully decorated and furnished and comfortable and we wanted for nothing. Service included tea on the lawn after our arrival and later after the excellent continental breakfast a viewing of the impressive open cellars beneath the chateau, the site of former wine and spirit making.

Local points of interest from Patrick & Françoise Dandurand

  • The soft white rock beneath La Plante and neighbouring estates conceals a great network of underground galleries, dug by the Gallo-Roman inhabitants as places to hide when waves of barbarians swept over the land in the 5th and 6th centuries. Fascinating.
