The Experience

Crank up the Bose sound system – only the bullfrogs can hear you in the olive trees and the bougainvillea. It’s cooler at night inland and you can unbend here in the countryside, wandering among wildflowers and lounging by the pool, with three terraces to spread out on: fairy lights twinkling, barbecue fired up and pots of lavender scenting the air.Play boules or table tennis among the cypress and almond trees. There’s a cosy living room stocked with books, a TV and a big open fire for cooler evenings, and a kitchen stuffed with kit – the owners are keen cooks. Each bedroom is glorious: one has an enormous bed, another views of Grasse, one with a beamed ceiling and a bath overlooking the canal.Julian and Ros will leave you a few bottles of (good) wine and food for your first night, then you can seek out Grasse’s restaurants (and perfumeries), or head down to the Riviera for a little glitz.

Such a beautiful time staying at The Pantarou. We were a group of 10 friends and it slept and seated us all comfortably. The terrace is surreal, there’s a canopy of pink flowers hanging over the dining area which shades you from the sun during lunch. We did a couple of day trips to the beaches and beach bars in Cannes and Nice (both a short drive or a quick picturesque train ride from Grasse town!) and also drove to La colle sur Loup which is an ancient hill top village/town full of artisan shops. Julian and Ros couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming to their characterful villa!

The neighbourhood

Burrowed into the hills between the Côte d’Azur and Provence proper, the mas is an easy drive from the fragrant town of Grasse (10 minutes) and the beaches of the Riviera (20 minutes). It feels remote, down a long drive leading off a very quiet road, but a short spin in the car (five minutes) takes you to Peymeinade and its shops and restaurants. Cabris (14 minutes) has two Michelin-starred auberges – Vieux Château and la Chèvre d’Or – or there’s a repurposed London bus dishing up takeaway pizza at the entrance to Peymeinade village.

Local points of interest from Julian Algar

  • There is a row of great food shops only 5 minutes drive away. There is fruit and vegetables, cheese, a butcher, a fishmonger, a baker and an off licence, all excellent quality and not a lot more than supermarket prices. One stop shopping.
  • There is a working olive oil mill just 5 minutes drive away that does tastings and also sells local honey and exotic salad dressings and vinegars.
  • Grasse, the perfume capital of France, is only 10 minutes away and is home to some of the most famous perfume houses, you can visit the museums and shops or even do a course and create your own perfume.
  • There are many local restaurants nearby, from pizzas to Michelin stars and everything in between. Some located in beautiful hilltop villages such a Cabris, others in the winding lanes of the old town of Grasse.
  • Just behind the villa is a small canal with a path that is the start of a beautiful circular walk. You can see anything from dragonflies, birds and butterflies to (only seen once) a young wild boar trotting past in a field.
  • We have just installed full air conditioning in all the bedrooms and in the sitting room, so it's ready to be cool at night, even in the hottest of summers!

Julian Algar

Chatty and charming, Julian and Ros met in Wiltshire in their 20s but now live in Monaco – La Pantarou is their little country bolthole which they bought in June 2017 and spent a year doing up. Ros is an artist – her paintings of fruit and veg hang in the kitchen – and they love cooking – which is why the kitchen is so good.
