Villa Arcadia

Menton, Alpes-Maritimes
Bed & Breakfast

Spacious rooms in a hillside villa with views down to the French Riviera and shops and restaurants a ten-minute drive away

2 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

This peaceful villa is set above the old town of Menton and Ventimiglia in Italy and has incredible views of the coast below. Jeanetta has her quarters in the lower ground floor and will give you a key to come and go as you please.

Breakfast is served around the kitchen table or the terrace – baguettes, local jams, fresh fruit and vegetables from nearby markets; ask about evening meals. You can sit out under the shade of fruit trees in the large garden and use the barbecue to make your own supper. The salon has books and games for the rare rainy day and there’s a shared terrace outside the bedrooms with sun loungers.

A gate in the garden wall leads to a walking trail to the coast that takes about 20 minutes – get a taxi back or drive in ten minutes. There are good restaurants both in Menton or Ventimiglia, from the three-Michelin starred Mirazur near the villa to casual pasta and seafood places.

Villa Arcadia has incomparable views over Menton and is a great base to visit that part of the Riviera - besides the citrus fête, Menton is a real hotspot for culture, art and music festivals. Italy is also just along the coast - you can see the border from the garden.

The neighbourhood

Menton is the last town on the Côte d'Azur before the border with Italy and has remained less developed than neighbours such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes. It is said to be the sunniest town in France and has developed a reputation as a foodie haunt too. As well as a marvellous old town with steep cobbled streets, the town has a museum dedicated to Jean Cocteau. A music festival takes place in August.

Local points of interest from

  • Giardini Botanici Hanbury the large botanical gardens near Ventimiglia was created in 1867. Spend a few hours there to admire the 5,800 ornamental, medicinal and fruiting species in 18,803 hectares.
  • Menton’s Jardin Serre de la Madone offers guided tours and group visits. The garden was finished in 1939 by Lawrence Johnstone. Terraces, rockeries, pergolas, ponds and orange grove, rare species and perfumed plants make this a lovely day out.
  • Explore the many beaches and coves of the Cote d’Azur. The Sablettes Beach between the 2 ports, or a 40 minute train ride takes you to the hidden coves of Cap D’ail and Eze with their rocky promenades.
  • Balzi Rossi caves on the Italian/French border, 10 minutes from the house by car, with an important archaeological site, as well as the beautiful beaches with emerald waters.
  • Musée de Bastion on the harbour wall, showcasing the works of poet, artist and writer Jean Cocteau. Built in the 17th century by the Prince of Monaco, and opened its doors to visitors in the mid 20th century. And recently built the Jean Cocteau Museum.
  • Choices of restaurants are abundant, in and around Ventimiglia to Dolceaqua as well as famous French restaurants 5 minutes by car. Swimming or walking during the day and incredible dinning experiences by night.
