The Experience

Raise a glass of champagne to this laid-back villa with views – you’ll find a bottle waiting for you in the fridge. Built in the 19th-century before this area became so popular, it has a big, exotic, multi-tiered garden, and views that reach to the Cap d’Antibes.

The barn-like kitchen is great for cooks, and there’s a ‘palmeraie’ with a pizza oven so you can lunch under the palms. Enjoy light-filled rooms dotted with objects from distant travels, and bedrooms with views of the sea – including one in a round tower.

The site feels remote yet everywhere is walkable: Vallauris up the hill, Golfe-Juan down. Stare at the yachts in Antibes, bask on the sands of Plage de la Garoupe, stroll La Croisette at Cannes. The Riviera may be swanky but the coves of the Cap d’Antibes are wild and beautiful and worth a clamber to get there.

We felt very much at home in the villa and were made to feel most welcome by Elaine and Jean Pierre. Jean Pierre met us and showed us around the villa, including the fridge with some ready chilled wine for weary travellers! He popped over a couple of times during our stay to tend to the pool, bringing us a treat of pain au chocolate for breakfast. The villa is situated just outside the town with a good selection of shops and restaurants. The train station is close by with regular and quick services to nearby resorts and towns. We loved our stay at the villa.

I loved my stay at Villa de Maria. The house is beautiful and the outdoor space is fabulous for relaxing and swimming. A wonderful place to stay in the South of France!

The neighbourhood

The villa stands between hilly Vallauris, famous for its Picasso-inspired ceramics, and the seaside resort of Golfe-Juan. The legendary beaches, least packed in autumn and spring, are a 15-minute drive, as are many highspots: Antibes, its Old Town and Picasso Museum, festival-studded Cannes, and party resort Juan les Pin. Find peace on the Lérins Islands, where you can walk through pine forests and snorkel in turquoise coves.

Elaine de Maria

The owners, she Scottish, he Sicilian-Lebanese, found the house 15 years ago. What clinched the deal was the discovery of their initials (DM) carved above the cellar door. Charming, off-beat and well-travelled, they live in London but have a flat in the area, and if they’re not here to welcome you, friends of theirs will.
