Marseilles is less than an hour away, but around La Chamade it’s all absolutely quiet, in rolling countryside and forests. A grand entrance leads to the main house, originally a 17th-century stone farmhouse but much extended – five bedrooms here, and a three bedroom guest house beside it so ideal for two family groups. There’s even a secluded bedroom by the pool house if you’re bringing granny, nanny or newly-weds as part of your party. It’s all beautifully refined, continually being upgraded by the retired diplomat owners and kept smart by a local housekeeper who will be there to meet you. Out in the grounds, the pool’s cover purrs out of sight to reveal beautiful tiles, exquisite for quiet swims or a noisy crowd; a sandpit and trampoline, along with the fenced off pool, make the gardens child-friendly too. It’s easy to explore historic Provencal villages from here – pretty stone-built Rognes is your nearest a few miles away – or Luberon vineyards. Chateau la Coste is a fascinating day out, with futuristic sculptures, an art trail around the vines and tastings in a modern glass and concrete café.

Local points of interest from Marie-Helene Riera

  • Aix-en-Provence: 25 min, the city of Cézanne with museums, markets and its well known international lyric festival. We recommend to take the beautiful wineyard route which will bring you straight to the center. Don't miss the cathedral Saint-Sauveur.
  • Within 15 min distance: Lourmarin and its place-to-be market, Ansouis and its castle with guided tour, the fabulous contemporary art walk in Chateau La Coste, Cucuron and its famous pond. The ancient Abbaye de Sylvacane .Golf in Mallemort, tennis in Rognes
  • The Lubéron: 40 min, we suggest you rent a bike in Bonnieux and cycle around Lacoste and Ménerbes or take any other beautiful tour. Roussillon and its amazing coloured sands is worth visiting.
  • The Alpilles: 40 min, Avignon and la Cité des Papes, Nimes and Arles with their magnificient arenas and roman amphitheatres. Stroll a sunday in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to see its huge antique market and continue to Saint-Rémy to admire the beautiful shops.
  • Marseille: 45 min, the most ancient city of France, go and visit its SAFE maritime harbour, the Mucem and have a drink en la en la Place du Pannier. We recommend Cassis , a small marina where you can step in a boat to look at some wonderful Callanques.
  • Kids: You can surprise them with an excursion to Zoo de la Barben 20 min. Big indoor and outdoor playground in Saint-Cannat.On the premises boys will play life-guard in the big swimming-pool while girls can train aerobic dance on the trampoline.
