The Experience

Lounge by the pool as classical music plays; sip wine under the plane trees. This 18th-century house of magnificent proportions, surrounded by green gardens and grounds, is a short drive from Arles.

Interiors in reassuringly traditional style are personalised by objets from the owners’ travels. Breakfast is a sumptuous affair at pretty tables; dinner comes with local wines. There are four drawing rooms where log fires smoulder, and a smoking room with a grand piano. Gilbert and Olivier want their guests to feel at home.

Pop into Arles for shops, restaurants, museums…and the amphitheatre, a stunning venue for bull-running, bullfighting and concerts. Arles is also the gateway to the Camargue, whose marshy wind-blasted delta is home to bulls, flamingoes and wild horses. Set off on a safari.

The neighbourhood

The entrance is off the road into Arles (4km). Old crossroads of the Roman empire, the town is rich with antiquities. Book up a Van Gogh tour (he lived here) or follow in his footsteps to St Remy (30km) in the sleepy, scented hills of Les Alpilles. In summer, cool off at the ‘son et lumiere’ of Les Baux (22km) where art is dramatically projected onto subterranean walls. Some of Provence's best beaches are in the Camargue, from the dunes of Piémanson (50km) to the popular sands of Saintes Maries (40km).

Local points of interest from Gilbert Poirier

  • Les Carrieres de Lumieres - a former quarry with art-based multimedia shows in Les Baux de Provence and Glanum, Roman town. You can go to see le "Moulin de Daudet" in Fontvieille.
  • Marseille is only 45 min away. Explore the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) whilst you're there.
  • Avignon is only 30 minutes away.Aix en Provence is 30 minutes away too.
  • Visit the Luma Foundation with Frank Gehry. The Van Gogh foundation with is rare exhibitions of famous contemporary artists versus van Gogh
  • Explore Camargue and its Natural Park : horses, flamingos, birds, bulls....and the beach at the Saint Marie de la Mer.
  • Visit Arles' Antiques Museum...and other museums...Arles and the area (Saint Rémy, Maussane, Eygaliere...) offers plenty of good restaurants, vinyards...

Gilbert Poirier

Brought up in Provence, Gilbert worked in Paris for 35 years. Looking for a new start, he returned to the south in 2007 and found this splendid place. A friendly and helpful host who knows and loves the area, he lives with Olivier (the chef) and three happy dogs on the top floor.
