The Experience

This five-hectare estate has views stretching from St-Rémy-de-Provence all the way to the distant Dentelles de Montmirail mountains – and even has its own mountain, featuring caves with 2,500-year-old rock paintings.

Your apartment is on the lower level of the main house but you’ll have the whole place to yourself as your hosts live abroad. Play board games or watch TV in the bright sitting room, gaze at your mountain from the furnished terrace or have a picnic in the woods; the landscaped gardens have many nooks and crannies to explore, plus a saltwater swimming pool and summer kitchen.

Walk straight onto footpaths or hire bikes in St-Rémy, a five-minute drive down the road. The fortified hilltop town of Les Baux is just over the hill and Marseilles, the coast and the Camargue are all about 45 minutes’ drive.

Truly exceptional to find a property sleeping 2 - 4 people but with the private facilities normally attributed to a much larger house. Wonderful grounds to explore, woods in which to picnic, your own mountain and all on site. The views are glorious as is the huge swimming pool. At any time of day there's a shaded patio for outside dining, not to mention the summer kitchen beside the pool. If you enjoy a quiet countryside setting but within easy striking distance to an interesting Provencal town then you'll love this very special place.

The neighbourhood

Lively St-Rémy has an abundance of stylish bars, restaurants and shops as well as a Van Gogh walking trail and a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays; the renowned Roman archaeological site at Glanum is also a five-minute drive away. You’re 15 minutes from Carriere des Lumieres, an old limestone quarry in Les Baux that has been converted into a huge indoor 'son et lumiere' site featuring a different artist each year. The stunning Musée de la Romanité in Arles is a 45-minute drive away.

Local points of interest from James Burstall

  • The guest apartment in this exceptional property has two newly appointed bedrooms, each with own shower and toilet, a living room with lovely views across the fountain to the Alpilles and beautiful sun terraces surrounded by olive trees and gardens.
  • It has its own terrace with dining table and six chairs, two outdoor sofas and four sun loungers. Around the pool, there are two further large dining tables, sofas, ten sun loungers and outdoor shower. The pool is a salt water eco pool.
  • We come here to escape the bustle of the big city. It is a rare thing to find a home that nestles in sun drenched Provençale mountains with a fabulous pool and sun decks for sipping local wine but also a short drive into a stunning Southern French town.
  • There are markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays with sumptuous local produce and the streets are full of delicious bakeries, cafés, clothes and decoration stores. You can browse the streets and have a glass of local organic wine.
  • Take in some of the sights - from olive farms, to wineries, to the majestic illuminated caves at Les Baux. In summer months, you can also find opera and classical music concerts in vineyards and in the Roman ruins at nearby Orange and Nimes.
  • The Alpilles natural park on our doorstep offers many trails for walks, runs or bike rides. Bikes can be rented in town. And if you fancy a hop to the beach, there are many within an hour’s drive for a day trip at Cassis, La Grande Motte and Carry.

James Burstall

James is a true Francophile, perhaps not surprisingly as his grandfather was French. He lives in London with his partner but they visit their Provencal retreat as often as they can. Magdalena, a retired hotelier from St-Remy, looks after the property.
