The
Experience

Keep climbing up a small road surrounded by vineyards and lavender fields to find an unassuming 17th-century house with pretty blue shutters and a view-filled garden. You walk straight into the rustic kitchen – the hub of the house – full of character with painted beams, all you need for cooking and a well-lit dining table for eight. The kitchen opens into a large living room with squashy seating, a big fireplace, art on the walls and plenty of nick-nacks and artefacts from all over the world – this feels very much like staying in a friend’s house rather than a scrubbed-bare holiday home; one bedroom and bathroom are downstairs so will suit those challenged by stairs. Two bedrooms upstairs face south, one with a sloped ceiling faces west, all have stunning views, a very cosy feel and copious amounts of blankets. Sunny days will be spent outdoors in the garden with a summer kitchen, a water bassin in the shade of a lime tree and a tennis court for cooler evenings – racquets provided. Borrow bikes and explore the gorgeous upper Var, swim in sparkling lakes, eat in great restaurants. Or just stay here – it’s lovely.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from William Gordon

  • Domaine de Pamparigouste (translated from the Provencal: ‘Le Pays Au Dela’ – the ‘Land Beyond’; also the ‘Land of Plenty’), is a Private Private Estate in the Verdon National Park, with 22 acres of olive trees, truffle and other oaks, and lavender.
  • Located in the Var – the ‘Department’ widely regarded as the most special in France – from the coast of St Tropez and Hyeres, up to the foothills of the Alps, with the stunning Lac St Croix and Europe’s own grand canyon – Les Gorges du Verdon
  • 500m above sea level, between Aups, the Truffle capital of France (covered by many a BBC documentary), and Tourtour – the ‘village in the sky’
  • Swim in the Lac St Croix, go wind surfing, sailing, canyoning in and canoeing up the Gorges, riding, trekking, biking, yoga, golf. Every major village – Cotignac, Aups, Lorgues, Salernes spring to mind – has an open air market twice a week
  • The area is blessed with many terrific restaurants, from the small village bistro to France’s premier truffle restaurant: Bruno, between Salernes and Lorgues, and the new Domaine de La Baume (was owned by painter) Bernard Buffet, just 5 minutes away.
  • Discover the magic of the land of Pagnol, as captured in ‘Jean de Florette’ and ‘Manon des Sources’... in complete privacy - yet close to so much...
