The Experience

Leave the beautiful town of Cotignac to enter the vineyards and drive up the lane, to a large clearing of sloping fields and majestic walls guarding an ancient bastide, and outbuildings, pool house, tower and wells. This rambling place has not been stripped of its character; indeed, its lived-in charm is what makes it special. The relaxed owner meets, greets and retreats to a smaller house up in the woods, handing over his beloved home to you. It’s an authentic and generous place that’s been extended over the years, with bikes to borrow, ping pong to play, fields and vineyards to lose yourself – or your kids. Leave your designer tastes behind; thrill to nooks, crannies, rambling corridors and three staircases. Bedrooms mix blankets, artisan bedspreads and books; the cluttered kitchen comes with delicious goodies, including fruits, nuts and olive oil; and a single room is tucked into the tower, reached by a gorgeous stair. Relax with a book in the shade of the loquat tree, as the scent of herbs wafts on the air. Dive into the deep, deep pool.

Just had a wonderful week staying at Domaine Lou-Coudon. The house and surroundings surpassed our expectations. We found it hard to leave each day to explore the area as we were so blissfully content to relax by the glorious pool or swing in the hammocks. Lots of additional extras to entertain kids and adults - table tennis table, badminton net, a diving board in the pool, boules, bicycles to use, even some weights if you’re missing your gym! Tony was an excellent host, very informative with good recommendations as well as solving any issues we had promptly. Hope to return very soon.

Lovely house with everything we needed. Fantastic swimming pool. Beautiful area to explore. Tony is exceptional host with a wealth of local knowledge. We would love to return.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Tony Patterson

  • A stunning region of small, medieval villages, old Crusader castles, vineyards and olive groves, long plain tree bordered roads and the natural beauty of oak forests, the Gorge de Verdon, lavender plains and the beaches and coves of the coast and Calanques
  • Cotignac has troglodyte caves and narrow cobbled streets to explore, a tree shaded main street with artisan shops, open cafes, restaurants, 3 bakeries, wineries, art/craft galleries and markets for local produce, art, crafts and brocante.
  • The area supports vibrant cultural events and festivals throughout the year for all tastes. The small village cinema is like a private viewing air under the rock cliffs in summer. Village fetes are fun at the end of active or serene days. Yet
  • close to Aix-en-Provence. If you can pull away from your 2m deep, 5x12m pool with diving board.
  • Try a day around St Tropez at the friendly Cabin Bamboo beach restaurant - they do a perfect apple crumble - then the fairground on the way home after sunset. Or a boat ride into the Calanques coves near Bandol; wineries to visit everywhere (not just rose)
  • Nature and sport activities abound from pro cycling, canyoning and rock climbing to long walks away from it all, lazy lakeside days with picnics (try Lac de St Croix mineral turquoise waters), painting, natural wonders under the blue Provence sky. Wellness
