The Experience

Retreat to this little hideaway in a wildlife-rich valley between two villages. You need see no-one, but Pamela lives just a stroll away and you are welcome to use her pool. She organizes activities like yoga and is generous with wine, flowers and fruit. Ask her about all things regional, like walks and vineyards.

The cottage has been faithfully recreated using tuff stone from the original ruined building and it’s unpretentiously charming. After a day’s cycling, or doing nothing in particular, what a treat to sit out on the kitchen terrace with a glass of something local to be serenaded by cicadas and frogs.

Walk to Salernes and picturesque Villecroze to visit galleries and linger in cafés by fountains. Drive 30-minutes to Tourtour, known as the ‘village in the sky’ and one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, or 90 minutes to the Cote d’Azur.

I liked the fact that "La Pichouline" was named after a popular Provencal variety of olive, and is common to the area. It gave me the positive feeling of a magical spot to rest and revive the spirit. At the same time, I found Pamela charming and cultivated company during my short visit. She obviously has the gift of bringing people together.

The neighbourhood

La Pichouline is 2.5km (40 minutes’ walk) from medieval Villecroze known for its music festivals and Knights Templar House. Equidistant is Salernes with its Sunday market, natural river pool and famous hexagonal terracotta tiles. Both have supermarkets and eateries – try Salernes’ Café de Vigne. For Michelin stardom The Bastide de Tourtour is a 15-minute drive. Pamela organises yoga, meditation and fitness classes, ask her too about walking, riding and cycling.

Local points of interest from Pamela Lowther

  • In the 10 acre grounds of a private little domain, lies the stone cottage La Pichouline, in its own tranquil setting of 2 acres. A short stroll away is the 15m x 7m swimming pool and boules terrace. We have a fully qualified yoga instructor available.
  • Valcolombe Vineyard, famous for its award-winning rosè, is just a five minute walk on our little chemin. The owner is happy to give you a private tour and a chance to sample his delicious wines.
  • Visit the breathtakingly beautiful Gorges du Verdon and Lac de St Croix, 40 minutes from the property. The lake is 9kms of emerald green waters surrounded by spectacular mountain range, the grand canyon of France. Great for kayaking, sailing, and hiking.
  • Visit Les Grottes in Villecroze, 2kms away. This troglodytic vestige is cozily settled in the heart of a sunny cliff made of tuff. Occupied since prehistory, it successively belonged to Benedictines. The village has an abundance of charming restaurants.
  • Salernes is best known for its tradition of tile making, especially for the hexagonal floor tiles known as tomettes. Said to be oldest area in western Europe to have made pottery, more than 7000 years ago, Salernes is known as the 'Cité de la Ceramique'.
  • We are surrounded by the most wonderful villages, full of character and atmosphere. Enjoy the many markets and restaurants, sip a glass of wine, and sample the Provènçal way of life.

Pamela Lowther

A New Zealander, Pamela also lived in London’s Primrose Hill for many years – her grown-up children still live in the UK - and moved to Provence in 1999 to set up a home-stay holiday business. She’s an attentive host and excellent cook and lives with her cats and dogs a short walk away through fields and woods. In 2019 she completed La Pichouline; her creation in cahoots with local architect Saccaggi.
