The Experience

A fascinating house. Outside, you see a typical large Provençal villa standing in its lush, well-kept garden. Inside you’ll find an eclectic cosmopolitan gathering of pictures, Persian rugs, Indian sconces and lanterns giving the feel of a much-loved family home to which you would like to be invited. The living and dining rooms are big and light and lead to shady terraces; the kitchen is small yet well-equipped and entirely practical. The superb master suite is above the larger salon; three other bedrooms are on the ground floor; all have antique chests, painted bedside tables, ceiling fans and attractive new bathrooms. The beautifully designed pool is enclosed on two sides by another bedroom suite. No chance of being bored with the DVDs, boules, trampoline, table tennis and indoor board games provided – and the summer kitchen area has all you need to entertain a big party. Lorgues, with its terrific weekly market, is less than an hour’s walk through pine forest and you are surrounded by vineyards. The spectacular Gorges du Verdon, the Lac de Sainte Croix and the famous Provençal beaches are all about an hour’s drive.

We had a wonderful stay at Le Clos de Gavarron, the house was very comfortable and well equipped and we especially enjoyed the many pretty outdoor seating areas. Many happy meals were eaten in the sunshine al fresco and the outdoor kitchen was very handy, especially when relaxing by the pool. We enjoyed the markets and Nuit de rosé in nearby Lorgues, and the cyclists amongst us found some excellent local routes. Would love to return!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Caroline Whitehead

  • Lorgues sits on a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves dominated by the 18th century St Martin's collegiate church. It was founded in 12c by the Knights Templar, its ancient gateways and narrow streets convey the atmosphere of medieval France
  • There are many restaurants catering for all tastes including Bruno's, famous for its truffle menus, 5 minutes from the house, Château de Berne and the Bastide des Magnans in Vidauban, 10 minutes down the hill and Pizza and Ice creams for kids in Lorgues.
  • Daily markets abound, selling everything from fruit, vegetables, flowers and clothes, shoes, tablecloths and jewellery. A great meeting time for the locals and visitors alike. Be as early as possible for parking. Lorgues on Tuesday is the biggest.
  • The beaches of St Maxime and St Tropez are only 45/55 minutes away or take the "ferry" from Port Grimaud or Ste Maxime to save parking in the busier St Tropez on market day. The shops are spectacular too. The Lac de St. Croix offers kayaking, swimming etc
  • Spend a morning wine tasting in the many vineyards around. They vary in sophistication but some of their shops are excellent sources of presents. Château de Berne also has 2 restaurants from the Bistro to Benjamin. Les Vignerons de Taradeau is excellent
  • Children can spend hours at the Acqua Park in St. Maxime or flying through the air on zip wires at Chateau L'arnaude 2 mins away. There are tennis courts in the village and riding nearby. Explore the Gorge de Verdun with lunch in Moustiers and its pottery

Caroline Whitehead

Caroline and Dan ran a restaurant – Dan's – in Chelsea for 26 years and they have some wonderful stories. Dan is ex-City but incredibly practical with his hands and Caroline has a flair for interiors. Both are very interesting and lively people and are great at hospitality. They live between France and the UK.
