The
Experience

Approaching this handsomely restored villa, its drive flanked with ancient olives, you’ll feel pleased with your choice. There’s a well-planned, well-kept air to the whole place; the right balance of plenty of things to do, and a sublime setting – with magical views of the perched village above – for doing nothing very much.

Walk through medieval villages, taste local wines; head for the beach at Bandol, take a trip to the Iles Calanques, or to Marseille. You’ll find a good local market on most days – and fresh breakfasts left for you – so no dashing out for croissants. And there are Su’s recommended restaurants to try, Michelin starred if you like.

Children can look forward to jungle gym, a trampoline and ping-pong; Go Karting at the Circuit Paul Ricard and swinging through the trees at the Royaume des Arbres.

Reviews

This Villa has been cleverly thought out in a thoroughly professional way. The plantings and surrounding vegetation have matured, giving the property a more private and enclosed feel since my last visit. More olive trees have been planted and a small vineyard is planned. My favourite spot is the kitchen, divided into separate prep. and wet areas, - great for communal cooking - and the huge living area with its high, vaulted ceiling. For example, while kids are relaxing, listening to music, or watching TV, grown ups can enjoy dinner in the spacious dining area. Yet everyone is together.

Location

The neighbourhood

Its landscaped acres, patios and pool, encourage staying close to home but, being surrounded by Bandol vineyards, there are plenty of potential visits, and the 45-minute cross-country walks to the perched villages of Brûlat and to Le Castellet are lovely. The coast, market and shops at Bandol are a 15-minute drive; it’s 20-minutes to the seaside, market towns of Cassis and Sanary-sur-Mer. Marseille is 45-minutes away; Aix-en-Provence an hour.

Local points of interest from Su Stephens

  • Mas des Avelines is situated 10km from the Circuit Paul Ricard which will be hosting the French Grand Prix plus many other races. The Hotel du Castellet opposite the track has one of the regions Michelin starred restaurants.
  • The house is located less than a 20 minute drive from the beaches at St Cyr Sur Mer and Bandol. Not only will you love the coastline but the bars and restaurants you will find there. We can provide you with details of our favourites.
  • The hilltop villages of Le Castellet and La Cadière d'Azur are within a few minutes drive and wonderful places to spend a quiet afternoon.
  • The house is surrounding by AOC Bandol vineyards. We can provide you with lots of suggestions for wine tasting in the area including Domaine Ott which is a five minute drive from the house.
  • For the chilldren there are lots of wonderful things to do including Le Royaume des Arbres (where they can swing in the trees), Go Karting at Circuit Paul Ricard, horse riding, OK Corral (fun park) and of course the beaches.
  • You will find local Provencal markets every day within the area. Wednesday mornings you will find a wonderful market at Sanary Sur Mer which includes food as well as you usually Provencal items. Afterwards enjoy a walk in this charming village.

Introducing

Su Stephens

Friendly owner Su Stephens knows the area inside out and lives in the tiny hamlet of Brûlat so is close to her two properties: the self-catering Mas des Avelines and the small hotel Mas de Brûlat. She’s hugely attentive to the details that make all the difference to a Provencale stay and sees that everything runs smoothly. Su also arranges a programme of activities for guests, including cooking, cocktail mixology, yoga, Pilates, tennis and golf.
