The Experience

Inside is unpretentious: three sweet and simple en-suite bedrooms, a lounge to relax in with books, a dining room with help-yourself drinks. Jane and Alban usher you in with rosé and tapenade, inviting you to explore the beautiful grounds.

Breakfast on Provence-sourced deliciousness: cakes and crunchy baguettes, fresh fruit, flakey croissants and organic jam, homemade yogurt. Ask for a picnic; enjoy it in the garden under the shade of cork oaks and mulberry trees to the sound of tweeting birds and the occasional rumble of a tractor.

In spring the park is filled with wildflowers. The valley of St Clement is more Tuscan than Provençal, noted for its microclimate and shielded from the Mistral. You’re close to Med beaches and St Tropez is a 20-minute drive, though longer in the full flush of summer.

Reviews

An ideal stop when travelling along the coast - only a few miles from main auto route. It is reached through spectacular scenery. Very quiet location - friendly hospitable hosts.

Phil, Norwich

We stayed with Alban and Jane for 3 days and had a wonderful time. Very comfortable rooms, delicious breakfasts, very peaceful surroundings and a super pool. They are a great couple and could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend and would definitely return.

Judy, Glasgow

Jane and Alban are welcoming, approachable, knowledgeable and discreet hosts. The Villa Fontane is unpretentious and reasonable value for perfect break away from the stress of modern life. The St Clement valley is heavenly, an undiscovered gem, more Tuscan, than Provençal.

Location

The neighbourhood

There’s little here to disturb: a small country road between a vineyard and rows of olive trees, a single hilltop house in the near distance separated by a grassy hollow; a quaint stone chapel with its annual Fête Provençale. You can walk to the village of La Garde Freinet in 20 minutes (or drive in five) where there are small shops and restaurants, plus a towering fort with glorious views. It’s peaceful, picturesque and close to the Riviera coast - St Tropez, Cannes and Monaco. The villa is around 20 minutes from the A8 autoroute; the last leg of twisting mountain road will keep you on your toes.

Local points of interest from Jane Roy

  • You'll enjoy relaxing by the pool in the quiet of our sunny garden after experiencing the glamour and hustle of St Tropez on market days.
  • Ten hiking trails, leading into the massive Maures hills, start in La Garde Freinet village - suitable for a pleasurable Sunday stroll or a demanding athlete's challenge.
  • Provence is famous for its hill-top villages - try the aioli at Clem's in Grimaud on a Friday and any day is right for a sunset pastis in Gassin.
  • Go on a vineyard tour to taste the light rosé wines produced in the surrounding hills. Locally grown olives provide the perfect match at a musical evening in one of the properties nearby.
  • Cyclists dare to ride the winding forest roads at a thrilling speed. Golfers find themselves spoilt for choice with ten spectacular courses within a 25 mile radius. Kayaking down the Verdon Gorge is another treat not to be missed.
  • Artists have long been attracted to the glistening light of the St Tropez Gulf and many now live in La Garde Freinet as it's a village that real people live in all year round. The butcher's, the baker's and the artists' studio are always open!

Introducing

Jane Roy

After raising a family of three in Brittany, Jane and Alban decamped to Provence in early 2018 to run their own B&B. They’ve holidayed here in years past so know the area well, happy to recommend things to do and welcoming with coffee and cakes. They live in a separate wing of the house with their stripy grey cat, who is equally friendly.
