The Experience

In a clearing among lavender fields and truffle oak woods is a cluster of five cottages, all quite secluded and private from each other. Your two-storey stone building was once a shepherd’s rest and has views to Mount Ventoux.

A local lady, Joelle, greets you and leaves flowers and wine. You may not want to stray far – there’s a cosy fireplace in the cottage, plus books and games, and a boules court and shared swimming pool. Fire up the barbecue on your private terrace and marvel at the sunset; pick your own veg and herbs from the shared garden.

You can walk or cycle on nearby trails or go cliff climbing nearby or hop in the car to explore the Luberon. There are plenty of good places to eat – the nearest in the medieval town of Saignon, a five-minute drive away; the closest big food shops are in Apt, a ten-minute drive away.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are ten hectares of land, four of which are lavender fields. The nearest town, medieval Saignon, is 2.5 km or a five-minute drive and has a bakery and three restaurants. The nearest supermarket is in Apt, a ten-minute drive away, where there are also restaurants and cafes. There’s a two Michelin-starred restaurant, La Bastide de Capelongue, in the hilltop town of Bonnieux, about half an hour’s drive away, as well as a well-regarded restaurant called Le Fournil.

Introducing

Miriam and Jürgen Nieveler

Miriam and Jurgen, the owners, are German but have lived in Provence since 2010. Jurgen is retired (he worked for General Electric) and Miriam is an artist. They used to holiday at this property, then tried a longer winter let, then decided to buy it and move here. They now live outside Aix-en- Provence, and Joelle, who is from nearby Apt, looks after the cottages.
