Viens, Vaucluse

In a hidden valley garden sprinkled with art and a pool, a cottage for 2 full of interest and character. Charming owners, near Céreste

1 bed

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 2

Imagine manicured lawns and a bridged stream, birds, flowers, oaks, poplars, maples and Himalayan cedar – three resplendent hectares in a secluded valley. Here live Adrian and Dora, he an artist (discover painted sculptures in the garden) and former gallery owner, she a writer; both are charming and discreet. With its back to the main house is your rustic stone cottage, single storey but split level, and steeped in character. Enjoy a light airy living space (stone walls and tiled floors keeping you cool on a hot day), with a small sofa, an oval table, a scattering of rugs, a well-equipped kitchen, and French windows opening to a lush woodland terrace and barbecue – bliss. The bedroom is furnished with modern paintings and oriental antiques, a great big bed, and a snug shower room with heated towel rails. Books, TV, CDs, DVDs (heaps of them) and a bottle of wine on arrival – what more could a peace-lover ask? This is a sweet simple set up for two, with walks from the door, the Prieuré de Carluc close by, markets and medieval villages all around – and a private pool to come home to.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Adrian Firth

  • This is old, untouched Provence. Until very recently people went everywhere on foot (the last postman to deliver from farm to farm on foot died only a decade ago), and the ancient footpaths are everywhere.
  • Walking, one joins that river of generations, trudging past remote farms, and one espies ruined houses, all built in cut stone, lost in woods or on a hiltop left undisturbed by the plough.
  • Here one immediately senses the past, the remote past. In this valley they once mined for silver. Up in a cave in the cliff a woman lived with her goats only 100 years ago. We are only short-lease tenants of this old, old ground.
  • The last guest said "We spend the evenings looking up at the stars and listening to the silence". Yes, it is incredibly silent here, we have heared that from guests so very often over our 20+ years of lettting. And there's virtually no light pollution.
