The Experience

Walk down a cobbled narrow street and through a tall wooden gate into another world – a glorious walled garden with soaring plane trees, manicured lawns, box hedges and paved paths, and a handsome three-storey house framed with trees, shrubs and climbers.

Amaury and his partner Gilles live on the top floor with their friendly Weimaraner and two shy cats and will take great care of you with the help of their attentive staff. Breakfast is served around an oval table in the dining room or at separate tables on the patio – bread, pastries, cakes, jams, fruit salad and freshly-squeezed orange juice, plus cheeses and charcuterie on request.

Two spectacular salons are furnished with a mix of antiques and modern art, and a paved garden path winds past a bamboo grove and aviary to a tucked-away swimming pool and spa. The Michelin-starred restaurant La Mirande is a four-minute walk, and an abundance of other restaurants a little further – Amaury will happily show you the way on foot.

Open a large wooden gate and step into another world, one of greenery and bird song, a far cry from the busy city streets of the historic centre of Avignon. You are steps away from the Palais du Pape and the famous Pont D'Avignon. Abandon your car and walk. Restaurants, shops, theatres, museums are all nearby. La Divine Comedie is a world of luxury, privacy with welcoming owners. Very special.

The neighbourhood

The house is at the end of a cul-de-sac and was originally part of the extensive surrounds of the medieval Gothic Palais du Pape, which you can walk to in five minutes – the tower is visible from the jacuzzi in the garden. Everything in Avignon is in walking distance, including shops, restaurants, theatres and cinemas. Pont d’Avignon is 10-15 minutes on foot, along with the contemporary art museum, Collect Lambert.

Amaury De Villoutreys

Amaury and Gilles spent over seven years restoring the house to its current elegant state. They are both unpretentious, warm and attentive hosts who moved from Paris in search of a better climate and lifestyle. Amaury was a property director and Gilles an antique dealer/interior designer who owned a boutique in Paris. Both are passionate about art and history.
