The Experience

Come for the wild setting, deep in a spectacular gorge – wooded slopes climb on either side and you can walk or cycle miles from the door. Rooms are in an old house attached to the owners’ mill, all beautifully restored with double glazing and super showers.

Eat plentiful breakfasts of fresh local produce, served at a large table inside or small tables in the garden in summer, with timings to suit you. Tasty suppers and simple lunch platters on request too, and hospitable Françoise leaves juice, coffee and cake in the guest kitchen for you to help yourselves.

You’re on one of the main routes through the Luberon, so exploring is easy – head to the hills, stroll the beautiful villages of Bonnieux and Lourmarin, bring home market food for picnics in the garden.

After 2 weeks travelling through Provence, La Ressence was by far our favorite place to stay. We enjoyed it so much, we stayed an extra day. Hosts Francoise and Thierry truly made us feel at home and the rooms were perfect; luxurious comfort without being fussy. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful, with homemade goodies. Francoise booked us advance concert tickets and even prepared us supper for our arrival night. Friendly conversation and helpful recommendations were always available. The location is wonderful; 10 minutes in between Bonnieux and Loumarin. We will certainly return.

The neighbourhood

La Ressence is halfway along the Combe de Lourmarin, a spectacular gorge through the Luberon hills. Lourmarin, with its excellent Friday market, is three miles down the gorge and the lovely perched medieval village of Bonnieux three miles the other way - both with shops, galleries and restaurants. Lavender fields (in flower in summer), rock climbing, horse riding and the Foret de Cedres for shady walks are less than half an hour's drive.

Local points of interest from Thierry & Francoise Lecourt

  • La Ressence is in the middle of La Combe de Lourmarin separating the Petit Luberon from the Grand Luberon in the heart of Parc du Luberon classified world UNESCO geoparc.
  • Bonnieux is one the three villages of the Luberon Golden triangle (Bonnieux, Menerbes, Gordes). Menerbes became famous as Peter Mayle the novelist was leaving there when he wrote One year in Provence.
  • Every day an open flea market (marché de Provence) on a different village around, where you will find fresh products from the area, local craftwork, and many more.
  • The ocres mines and area in Roussillon are superbs, you can walk in canyons full of red, yellow and orange.
  • All summer a lot of music and theatre festivals in all villages and cities around, including the most famous one : theatre festival of Avignon
  • Côte du Luberon and Côte du Ventoux are one of the best quality/price wine rate in France, tasting very like Côte du Rhone, they produce red, rosé and white. La Ressence as some wineyards as partners with special discount for our guests.

Thierry & Francoise Lecourt

Françoise spent much of her childhood here in La Ressence - it's been in her family for 120 years, and her parents still live not far away in Bonnieux. A desire to slow down a little after years running a restaurant in St Tropez drew Françoise back home with husband Thierry, an ex-racing driver, and their daughter. Provençal hospitality comes naturally and they are enthusiastic about helping guests make the most of their holiday.
