La Vieille Maison

Cabrières d’Avignon, Vaucluse

2 charming little gîtes built into village ramparts - luxurious bathrooms, sturdy beams and delightful terraces - a hop to Avignon or Arles

2 places

Sleeping from 2 – 4

Prepare to fall hopelessly in love. Here, in the medieval village of Cabrières, is a cluster of wonderful stone buildings built into the ramparts alongside a 15th-century château. John and Annie, creative and delightful, share a garden heady with the scents of pine, jasmine and roses, and pour love and attention into everything they do. Two-storey Jonquille has a small delicious courtyard with candlelit stone steps to a terrace above; Cecilia has a lofty ceiling and a mezzanine for extra beds (chair-futons for children). Walls are pale, floors are polished wood or ancient-tiled, sturdy beams are painted white, there are marble-top tables made by local artisans and pretty boutis quilts on antique beds. Bathrooms, with retro taps and heated rails, are luxurious. After a day out in Avignon, St Remy, Arles, Orange – remarkable sites all – slip into the crystal waters of the pool, skirted by comfy wooden loungers, fringed by a hedge of bamboo; or find your own secluded corner of the garden. The peaceful mazed village holds all you need and there’s a vineyard a fifteen-minute stroll: drop by for tastings!

A wonderful holiday in a classic Provencal village with the most helpful & generous hosts - our grateful thanks to you both

Pat and robin, London

Staying in Le Vieille Maison is sampling a perfect little slice of France. The apartment Jonquille is just right for a family of 4 or 2 couples. Everything we needed was there and anything that wasn't would have been provided by our most convivial hosts Annie and John. The apartments are beautifully and tastefully decorated and have fresh linen, towels and pool towels. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the garden and around the pool, we were welcomed by our hosts and felt immediately at home. The village has a good boulangerie, boucherie, epicerie and a very nice restaurant. 5 star!

One of the best places we have ever stayed. Thank you so much to wonderful hosts, Annie and John, who welcomed us into their family and home, gave us advice on the local area, fed us cake and wine, and ensured our holiday in the Luberon was completely perfect. There is so much to do in this region, as well as relaxing round the beautiful pool, and we really could happily have stayed a lot longer. We hope to be back!

We have used Sawday's recommendations for a number of years now. Mostly throughout France. We love that they seem to have been selected with care and are usually high quality and in interesting areas. I think we have a new favourite.! La Vieille Maison is a stunning property in an area that has some of the most wonderful scenery in France. What made this trip extra special was the welcome we received from Annie and John. We were with them for three weeks and and they were superb hosts. A lovely couple who we were rather sad to leave!..

Just returned from an all too short stay in La Vieille Maison, with fabulous hosts Annie and John, wonderful accommodation, beautiful gardens, amazing village setting and made to feel right at home by the family cat Minz. The pool and gardens are a great retreat and the location is perfect for getting out and about to see the delights that Provence has to offer. The little treats from these amazing hosts make you feel very special most of all good WiFi kept our teenager happy. Annie and John are on hand when needed and happy to make reservations on your behalf and John is a living sat nav!

We had a lovely stay in "Cecilia". Annie and John are charming and thoughtful hosts, providing little extra touches (marmalade in particular) and really useful local information on restaurants and markets. Food wise, everything we needed was available from the local village shops (we had some excellent lamb and steak from the butcher) and of course the markets. The week flew by, and as we drove towards home, with a plough (courtesy of the brocante market in L'Isle Sue La Sorgue) wedged into the car with cases of wine, we plotted our return!

Set in the charming, quiet village of Cabrieres d'Avignon our holiday began the minute we arrived. Our beautifully styled gite "Cecilia", with fully-fitted kitchen area, luxurious, spacious bathroom (bath with shower), super comfortable beds and our generous & thoughtful hosts Annie and John, we were left wanting for nothing! Happy days spent exploring the Luberon, relaxing in the garden and round the pool - it was the perfect holiday!

Cabrières D'Avignon maybe the best Vacluse village to stay in, and has no through traffic. It provides not only a couple delightful food shops but also two contrasting restaurants. Yet Avignon is only 30 minutes away, and many excellent markets are less than 10 minutes away. Jonquille itself is a haven, with great beds, facilities and a lovely balcony for breakfast. The Lupton's are exceptional hosts, and treated us like their visiting children! Nothing was too much trouble. The shared garden is charming, sheltered and peaceful, a total oasis.

Edward, Pewsey

Delightful apartment in a good village with butchers, bakers an general store, plus two restaurants. Hosts Annie and John are fantastic.

La Vieille Maison is an outstanding place to stay. The location gives easy access to some of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence and Cabrieres itself is charming and has an excellent boulangerie. John & Annie are the perfect hosts and have created an idyllic haven in which to spend a relaxing holiday. They made our stay extra special with their friendliness and by providing a few little extras not detailed on the website! We have no hesitation in recommending this jewel in Provence.

Paul, Crich

Not just a stunningly beautiful spot, but the warmest welcome of any holiday we have ever had! Annie & John have created a piece of Provencal perfection in their beautiful Gites, and couldn't do enough for us and our family during our stay with them. Half way through our first day, both our children asked when we could book to come back! The Gite is decorated with incredible charm and is packed with thoughtful touches, and the gardens are beautiful. We really enjoyed our stay, and will recommend La Vieille Maison to all our friends.

Catherine, Henley on thames

We had an utterly superb holiday start to finish. The gite is in a quiet location but centrally located for things to do and amenities. The property is well equipped and comfortable with good outdoor space and a swimming pool; perfect for a family or romantic break for a couple. But it is the owners that make this place special. We could not have been made to feel more welcome or at home - nothing was ever too much, including translating our menu and sending my son's socks home to England. It's a must!

Tanya, Wargrave

Not often do you leave holiday accommodation feeling as though you have become a member of the family! Beautiful surroundings, luxury accommodation - a boutique hotel still can't quite offer this.

Rachel, Chester

We have just completed the first week of an absolutely perfect holiday at Vieille Maison. We are so pleaseed we decided to book for two weeks!! It goes without saying how beautiful Provence is, and we need to add that John and Annie are perfect hosts offering lovely accommodation in Cabrieres, so quiet and yet within easy reach of many delightful places.

Martin, Leeds

We have just returned from our week escape to Cabrieres D'Avignon where we were blessed with exceptional weather and the finest hospitality we could have expected from our sublime hosts John & Annie. Our base for the week, St Cecile lived up to all our expectations. The accommodation was clean and tastefully decorated and the setting John & Annie have created outside in the courtyard and pool area was equally perfect. We are looking forward to many more trips to see both the Lupton's and Provence, a well recommended and truly special place to stay. Steve & Louise (Walton, Wakefield, England)

A warm welcome from Annie greeted us as we stepped into an oasis of lavenders, roses, chairs, cushions and a beautiful pool. A perfect place to relax. Our 1 bedroom apartment was delightful:good kitchen facilities, WM,dining area and lounge with French doors for the breeze. A perfect base for exploring this stunning area and a short drive to numerous restaurants. Our hosts went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and nothing was too much trouble. We felt we were coming home each night to our little piece of France, and when one finds this it is very special. Thanks to Annie & John

What a beautiful place to unwind in the tranquility of the garden and an ideal base to discover the treats of Provence. We stayed in Jonquille and the accommodation was second to none. Thank you to John and Annie, who were the ultimate hosts, we will be back!

Rhys, Cardiff

We stayed at La Vielle Maison in the Jonquille apartment and were delighted with everything La Vielle Maison had to offer. John and Annie were so welcoming, their home is beautiful and has everything you could wish for. Whether you wish for sightseeing or relaxing by the pool in the beautiful garden I highly recommend La Vielle Maison for the perfect holiday.

We had a wonderful week at the Vieille Maison staying in Cecilia Apartment. John and Annie have created a real oasis of tranquillity and paradise here in Cabrieres D'Avignon. The apartment is stylish, comfortable and is perfectly equipped. John and Annie are amazing hosts, extremely welcoming and helpful. If you are looking to stay in this area, then look no further! Steve & Anna

What an amazing, beautiful, warm, stylish home Annie and John have opened up to guests. We 'loved' our week at La Vieille Maison in 'Cecilia' with our six year old little boy who practically lived in the pool when he was not playing with their gorgeous cat Minz. I want to beg everyone to stay here - it truly is a little piece of paradise, with the warmest welcome; as guests have put in the guest book, "a home from home". If you are visiting this beautiful part of France I can't recommend this gite highly enough. Denise, Adrian and Dilan

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from John & Annie Lupton

  • WALKING. Excellent area for walking. We are on the North side of the village and have immediate direct access into the hills and the myriad of tracks. Although reasonably signposted a good walking map is desirable.
  • NEARBY ACTIVITIES! Golf – Excellent scenic 18 hole course about 20 minutes away. Canoeing – Really enjoyable 2 hour canoeing experience drifting idily down the Sorgue river. Fishing, new cycling tracks and riding are all available in the vicinity.
  • BEACHES. The two closest beaches are either Cassis, just East of Marseille; and Stes.-Maries-de-la-Mer, west of Marseille. Both are about 75 minutes drive.
  • There are many places to eat in the area, from pizza restaurants to the more expensive establishments offering high quality food and wines. We have many excellent wine Domaines in the local area including Domaine Bastidonne in our own village.
  • Daily daytime and evening markets in nearby villages. The Sunday morning farmers market in Coustellet is a “must” for purchasing fresh local produce. We provide you with a list of our quality favourites!
  • WORTH A VISIT!! The following historical villages are full of character. The Luberon hilltop villages of Gordes, Menerbes, Lacoste, Bonnieux, Goult, Roussillon, and St. Saturnin des Apt are all within a 30 minute drive.
