Bowl down the plane-tree lined road into the touristy, buzzing atmosphere of the town with its shops and good places to eat. Then step through an ancient gate to find peace and calm in this stone house (a silk farm in the late 1700s) with its huge garden, cooling pool and shading lime trees. You will be greeted by Louis and Florence Saint Joire who live on site and are always handy. There’s plenty of space, so even if the place is full you can feel private: take breakfast in the large dining room with tiled floor, or the greenhouse-like annexe, or in the garden when the sun is out. Sleep peacefully in bedrooms split between the main house (bright and airy, some with beams, all relaxing and comfortable) and more compact rooms in the annexe (painted pastel colours with antique furniture). Cyclists are very happy (they return again and again) with the start of the Mont Ventoux ascent on the doorstep, good hiking around the Dentelles de Montmirail is a 10-minute drive, Roman excavations are nearby and lavender fields are abundant. But you can just don a straw hat (hanging by the garden door) and hang around here happily doing not very much.
