The Experience

This 18th-century farmhouse is set in the countryside amid oak forests and fields but is a short drive from shops, bars and restaurants in Venasque or St Didier. Although it’s semi-detached, high trees and hedges give the place a secluded feel. The house is homely and easy for families with plenty of space to spread out both inside and out.

Find four living areas, a wood fire to snuggle by, a cottage in the garden (for an extra two guests), a shaded spot by the swimming pool. Make your own pizzas in the pizza oven (or hire someone to do it for you), fire up the built-in barbecue, sample the local wine –there are six good vineyards within ten minutes’ drive.

You’re well-placed to explore inland Provence – character-filled villages such as St Didier, Venasque and Malemort-du-Comtat are less than ten minutes’ drive; Mont Ventoux for cycling or hiking; Avignon and the Luberon villages are about 40 minutes’ drive away.

The most magical stay - WOW! Truly the experience of a lifetime. The beauty of the house and garden take your breath away. The interior styling is chic while feeling very homely, with so much space. The perfect place to lounge around and do nothing, play games and activities and host long dinners. St Didier is nearby and great for mooching around, although equally you could never leave this house and be very happy. For any celebration or get together with family or friends, you won’t find a better place.

My partner and I stayed for a wonderful week at Mas Hautes Garrigues in July. The setting is beautiful and secluded in lush gardens, it felt so private and the pool was perfect for sunbathing and pool games. We also loved having so many options for areas to eat and entertain guests on the property our favourite being the summer kitchen for lunches and evening bbqs! There was lots to do in the surrounding area, we particularly enjoyed kayaking and gorge walking as well as the weekend market in Carpentras and drinks overlooking the views from Venasque both within 15minutes of the house.

The house is so beautiful - it was such a treat to be there. The kitchen has everything you could think to need and with 4 different tables - every meal was a new experience. The beds were super comfortable, the showers had brilliant pressure and lovely fluffy towels. The garden is so peaceful - with a brilliant pool and a table tennis table room, where we spent many happy hours. We loved walking into Saint Didier each morning to collect our croissants and the farmers market on Monday was a treat. We loved the water activities in the local area. We would love to come back again.

This was a truly special place. The house and pool house were so nicely decorated and furnished. All the beds were comfortable. The garden and pool area are stunning and we had a great time in the pool and around the pool. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. We ate outside lots and used the barbecue. We also enjoyed playing table tennis in the games room. Such a lovely place in this beautiful part of France that we hadn’t explored before. We will definitely be back!

We had a week at Mas Hautes Garrigues last June. The house and garden are fabulous - very Provence. We really liked the privacy of the place, the layout of the house, and that it was so well-equipped. The pool was very welcome on those hot afternoons. We really loved the place.

We had a fabulous family holiday, the house and gardens are stunning and peaceful. We all enjoyed the pool and couldn't keep the kids out! Will definitely return.

Are you looking for a traditional Provencal farmhouse with thoughtful interior design? Tick. An azure blue swimming pool large enough that you can actually swim in it? Tick. Extensive and mature grounds with copious shady spots amongst beautiful green trees and room for children to run and play? Tick. Total privacy? Tick. A beautiful wine region with mountain views/climbs and picture perfect hilltop villages. Tick. Mas Hautes Garrigues is all of this and more and most appreciably a wonderfully tranquil setting to simply enjoy as a family.

Beautiful house with all you could need and more. Options of where to eat, space for peace and quiet and also big dinners. Favourite thing was the pizza oven! Walking distance to lovely little town. Over hiring e-bikes and cycling in the valley and between vineyards. Great wine and cheese area.

This is a true home from home: beds are incredibly comfortable, linen is the highest quality; the pool is a delight, and the garden and Summer kitchen lovely. There are lots of amazing walks close by - Mont Ventoux is worth the drive. beautiful towns like Pernes a short drive away too, and boulangeries, a butcher, grocers and restaurants in the closet town, St Didier. The beauty of this part of Provence is that it is REAL, and there are barely any tourists here so one gets a true French experience. So much to explore but more importantly, the beautiful house is waiting for your return.

If you want to explore inland Provence from a base of comfort and character then this is an ideal place. The pool is large and the garden vast with many shady corners to recline and relax. Outdoor living at its best. Beyond, markets, restaurants and vineyards beckon as does nearby Mt Ventoux for those who want a cycling challenge. Outdoor summer concerts, opera and dance are plentiful as are Roman ruins and other historic sites. You'll leave wanting more! Ideal for large families or group of friends.

We visited for 5 days in early October, the weather was perfect and the house was gorgeous. Full of character, it was an ideal place to get away from the city, we especially loved the variety of places to sit to eat, breakfast outside, lunch in the summer kitchen and then cosy dinners in the house. The beds were extremely comfortable! The area provided lots of activities; kayak trips with Kayak Vert in Fontaine, Sunday market in Carpentras and dinner at the vineyard Domaine La Camarette. All in all a great trip and will be returning next year, highly recommended!

Ryan

Loved everything about our holiday in this quintessentially Provençale house. Comfortable mattresses, beautiful framed beds, with white linen and fluffy towels. Light and airy kitchen is very well-equipped with a Nespresso machine. The outside space at this house is even more generous than the website photos suggest. The pool is huge and surrounded by gorgeous pine, olive and almond trees. Would recommend this house as a fantastic base from which to explore the area. We found it hard to tear ourselves away from the relaxing ambience - we definitely want to rent this house again in the future!

Location

The neighbourhood

Venasque is 3km away -a medieval hilltop village with a daily market, art shops and potteries, as well as an impressive church and a baptistry that includes pagan, Roman and Christian relics. The views of Mount Ventoux are spectacular from here. Nearby St Didier is a quaint village with plane tree-lined high street, coffee shops and restaurantsand a Monday market. Mont Ventoux, which is popular with hikers and cyclists,is a half-hour drive away. You’re a fifteen-minute drive to the nearest big town, Carpentras, which has supermarkets and an excellent flea market.

Local points of interest from Karen Francis

  • The lovely village of Saint Didier is 2km away down a lane flanked with vineyards and orchards. It has all you need -boulangeries, butchers, small supermarkets, restaurants and bars. Not at all touristy, electric bike hire and a lovely market every Monday.
  • On a hilltop 3km away you'll find the stunning Venasque, one of the 'plus beau villages de France' with two lovely restaurants and a bar with panoramic views. Lots of lovely walks start from there.
  • The Guardian listed the Sunday morning flea market in Carpentras as one of the top 10 in the whole of France! Closer to home on a Saturday morning there is a 'vide grenier' under the trees at the tiny Edgar Soumille aerodrome 4 minutes from the house.
  • Mont Ventoux is just 20km away- one of the most 'famous and feared' climbs of the Tour de France. You can drive there via the scenic Gorge de la Nesque, walk one of the trails or hire electric bikes in Bedoin for a more relaxing way to explore the area.
  • Walkers and cyclists will love the Vaucluse area. Half an hour away, the river at Fontaines-de-Vaucluse is turquoise and crystal clear. From there you can hire kayaks to travel down-river to Isle sur la Sorgue (famous for it's antique shops and stalls).
  • The garden is huge so plenty of room for badminton, boules, and table tennis and there are books, games and jigsaws to choose from in the library upstairs - something for everyone.

Introducing

Karen Francis

Simon and Karen live in London. When they decided to buy a property in the Luberon they both found the same one online –and when they went to view it, it felt like home so they put an offer in immediately. House manager Mathieu is on call if needed –his parents owned the house for 20 years and he spent around 10 years living there so knows the house inside out.
