Les Balcons has the lot: an idea of service that produces tea on winter afternoons and a daily feast of a breakfast (cooked specials, organic yogurt, fruit salad, espresso), that’s free on your birthday. Owners and staff appear to work with lightness and pleasure. Having decorated their Art Nouveau hotel by taking inspiration from the floral 1890s staircase windows, Jean-François and directrice Marie run the place with great charm. Rooms are simple yet pleasing and those that have already been updated are lovely. The five big family rooms have smart décor and modern lamps, parquet floors and two windows, decent bathrooms (slowly but surely being updated); singles have new walk-in showers. Some rooms are tiny but purpose-made table units use the space judiciously, amusing prints decorate the walls and front rooms have balconies with planted window boxes. At the back, you may be woken by the birds. An eagle eye is kept on maintenance, beds are firm, colours and fabrics simple and bright. Remarkable value, super people, and bang in the heart of the Latin Quarter.
