The Experience

For those seeking luxury, this place is paradise; a great wedding cake of rose-coloured stone and spiky turrets, the château was once the utopian vision of a local industrialist. Surrounding it are 40 hectares of newly-planted gardens, a parterre, a swimming pool and rolling views across brooks and forests. It’s the perfect place for a large family special occasion – heaps of space for children and adults to spread out, en suites for everyone and a magnificent orangery. You’ll be able to cook for any number in the professional standard kitchen, and there’s a choice of dining rooms too.The Dombes area is popular for its birdwatching and fresh water fishing. There are bikes for riding along quiet tracks, walks straight from the door and a riding stable close by. It’s just 15 minutes by car to the nearest three-Michelin star restaurant in Vonnas and under an hour from Lyon.

We stayed in the self-catering gîte in Domaine des Creusettes & dined at the Chateau. The family & their loyal staff could not have been more attentive. The whole complex is breathtaking. The grounds are being landscaped on a heroic scale. The Domaine is very comfortable, we were in an apartment with a glorious view of the Chateau. We were served a sumptuous dinner in the Chateau, and breakfast was delivered to the Domaine in the morning. Nothing was too much trouble for the Owners, in particular their adult children. Terribly convenient for Lyon airport and onward to Courchevel & Meribel.

The neighbourhood

The expansive parkland is a joy to explore on foot. La Chapelle is less than a kilometre away and has a handy little restaurant serving traditional Dombes cuisine (frogs legs, foie gras, chicken in cream: good, rich French food). The pretty timber-framed town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne is seven minutes’ drive and runs the gamut of restaurant options, plus a Saturday morning covered market in a medieval building.

Antoine Prost

Christian Prost comes from a local farming family but spent many years working in Taiwan where he met his wife, I-Fen. They raised their three children in France and live near Lyon, while son Antoine lives on site and manages the day-to-day running of the château. They bought the place in 2007 and spent 10 years bringing it back to its former glory, but they’re not finished yet; plans are underway to restore another gîte behind the main house where they will live.
