The Experience

An eccentric sort of place with interiors that add to the theatre. Arrive to an impressive courtyard, pass under the atmospheric ‘plafonds a la Française’ ceiling, up a dramatic staircase to eight big bedrooms with delightfully dated bathrooms. Spread out in the large sitting rooms, gather for breakfast around the family dining table, allow a chef to cook for you in the evenings if you don’t want to go out.

You’re on the edge of the Dombes region, a vast area of small freshwater lakes. Visit gastronomic capital Lyon by train from local St André (20 minutes). Return to country silence – just the odd honk of the resident goose.

Roam the 40 pretty hectares, swim in the pool, see horses, deer and a goat or two. The owners have grand plans: cultivating the gardens, more rooms, polo, cookery courses.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in the middle of hectares of good hiking countryside just north of Lyon in the Dombes – drained by monks in the 1500s. The towns of Montluel and St André are both 10 minutes’ drive away and have restaurants and supermarkets. Lyon is well worth visiting for even better French food, medieval and Renaissance architecture and the magnificent Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.

Introducing

Antoine Prost

Christian Prost comes from a local farming family but spent many years working in Taiwan where he met his wife, I-Fen. They raised their three children in France and live near Lyon, while son Antoine lives on site and manages the day-to-day running of the château. They bought the place in 2007 and spent 10 years bringing it back to its former glory, but they’re not finished yet; plans are underway to restore another gîte behind the main house where they will live.
