La Ferme du Soleil

Le Grand Bornand, Haute-Savoie

Ski to the door of this idyllic alpine chalet; a blazing log fire and a Savoyard meal await. The setting is a dream all year round

Eco ski-ing, a flute school, ukulele players – this place is unique! A hamlet of four old wooden houses (two chalets, two farm buildings) is high up, impossibly pretty, detached from the bustling world, with views to lift spirits and a deep silence in which to contemplate such beauty. Ski-in, ski-out doesn’t get much better than this, but non-skiers will be just as content so it suits mixed ability family get-togethers. Tea and cake will be waiting as you walk in the door, and dinners are convivial and delicious. And how about this: an early morning ski randonnée? Set off (very quietly so you don’t disturb the wildlife) with Jean-Francois the guide, with skins on your skis, a lamp on your head and breakfast on your back. Climb to the top of virgin peaks, spot golden eagles or a bearded vulture then enjoy a well-deserved outdoor breakfast before a super ski home. La Ferme du Soleil overlooks the small ski resort of Chinaillon, one of the best preserved villages in the Haute Savoie – the word ‘idyll’ really does apply. Big, cosy, beautiful, open and convivial – another dream realised.

What a magical week at La Ferme du Soleil with so much snow -perfect conditions! Rob and Lou looked after us so well – they were fun to spend time with and were very knowledgeable about the local area - nothing was too much trouble for them and their cooking was not only delicious but always beautifully presented. The chalet is beautiful, full of interesting features and is very spacious. The temperature dropped to -18C one night but the chalet was still warm - I loved the log fires. The best thing about the chalet is the unbeatable location. Situated high up the mountain, away from the crow

What a magical week with perfect snow conditions! Rob and Lou looked after us so well, were very knowledgeable about the local area and the food was excellent. The chalet is beautiful, peaceful, spacious, warm with log fires and full of interesting features. The best thing was the unbeatable location. Situated high up the mountain, ski in/out, in a world of its own but at the same time it is within walking distance of several restaurants. Le Chinaillon is a friendly resort with a considerable ski area for a week's skiing and the village itself is charming. I plan to return next year!

Superbly positioned chalet half-way up the mountain with stunning views to the west of receding ranges and ever-changing sunsets. Cars left far below, peace reigns. Wonderful open living area on top floor to eat, to chat and to find a corner for yourself. Skied straight out to serene blues and challenging blacks. Skied straight back to Rob and Lou’s entertaining hospitality and ever-tempting food. Great place to get away from it all and relax. Ski hire and lift passes really easy to organise on arrival. Will return.

What an utterly charming chalet. There are so many wonderful touches and the house feels both spacious and cosy with the vast wood fire in the centre of the living area and the breathtaking 360 views over the mountains. The location is totally perfect for the getting those first lifts and being on the mountain before the crowds - not to mention being able to ski straight back in and miss out having to traipse or get buses back into town. Rob and Lou were fantastic hosts - their culinary expertise really shone and their local knowledge (Cross Country Skiing and Husky rides!) was so helpful.

La Ferme du Soleil is the loveliest ski chalet I have stayed in - cosy, generous, inviting. The main room is dominated by an open fire you can lounge around and has plenty of inviting sofas, nooks & crannies for afternoon games of chess and bananagrams whilst enjoying delicious cake after a day on the slopes. The hosts were fantastic, friendly, relaxed and excellent cooks. The bedrooms are charming and beds comfortable. What more could you ask for?!

This is a beautiful rustic chalet on the piste with exceptional views and real charm. The chalet hosts were skilled cooks and we were very well looked after. The somewhat remote position is amply compensated by the advantages of being away from the village. Very good for parties who all know each other well and make their own entertainment.

I absolutely love this chalet. The location is perfect with stunning mountain views out of every window. It is right in the middle of the resort so you are in the thick of it during the day but as soon as the lifts close at 5pm you are left alone on the mountain which brings an enormous sense of peace and tranquillity. Highlights are the variety of great food served in the evenings and the fantastic view of the sunset from the chalets main balcony every evening.

A lovely week on the slopes of La Grand Bornand in the tranquil and unique surroundings of La Ferme du Soleil. The glorious chalet is bettered only by the lovely welcome and exquisite service offered by our attentive hosts. If you are looking for a relaxing week of skiing with great food and fantastic company, then this is the chalet for you.

My husband, family and I visited the chalet and had a wonderful few days holiday. The position of the chalet was perfect, with great views and away from the crowds! The food was delicious, interesting menus and presented beautifully. We couldn't fault the service and found the hosts were helpful and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation had a rustic charm which we loved - clean and tidy and all the facilities that we needed. I would highly recommend this chalet for anyone looking for a special place to stay.

The only drawback of La Ferme is having to leave its charm and tranquility to tackle the slopes. Never has the temptation to stay at home on a skiing holiday been so great! La ferme is, quite simply, sublime.
