The Experience

This lovely green-shuttered 1830s chalet has been part of the community for years; today it shines. No short cuts have been taken by generous hosts Sally-Anne and Simon (ex-Navy) who delight in providing the best. Start the day with breakfast at a time to suit you (fresh croissants, local jams, Nespresso coffee, Pukka teas), plunge into mountain adventures, return to a hot tub in the garden and supper at the auberge. Or eat in: the food is varied and delicious. Warm, woody, clean-cut bedrooms wait on the first floor, one with an extra sofabed, two with the views, all with bathrobes and toasty bathroom floors.

Accommodation

Reviews

This place is a little gem and is everything you would expect to find at a first class Alpine Chalet. We stayed end of summer but I can see that this place really comes into its own during the Ski season. The chalet is immaculately clean and surprisingly very spacious in the communal area. Breakfast was okay with Simon taking time to explain the local area.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Simon & Sally-Anne Airey

  • Sixt Fer à Cheval is classified as one of 'the most beautiful villages in France'. It's one of only 5 villages in the Alps to hold that title.
  • Sixt is famous for the Cirque du Fer à Cheval, a huge limestone amphitheatre of rock faces and waterfalls 500-700m high - a spectacular place for walking, cycling, cross-country skiing in winter, or for simply drinking in the breathtaking surroundings...
  • One of the region's most stunning waterfalls, the Cascade du Rouget, known locally as 'the Queen of the Alps', can be seen from the chalet and is an easy 40-minute walk away.
  • Most of the country round about is part of the largest Nature Reserve in Haute-Savoie, offering nature lovers and walkers the chance to see a huge range of alpine plants and wildlife - including bearded vultures, one of Europe's largest and rarest birds.
  • The chalet is just a few minutes walk (or ski) from the winter ski slopes, and in summer a huge range of walking and biking trails begin on the doorstep - a number of circuits are possible, via mountain refuge huts for refreshment or an overnight stay.
  • The historic village centre, with the River Giffre running through it, is close by. Visit the 13th century church, embark on a thrilling rafting trip, sample a Savoyard speciality at the auberge, or relax with in the sun at a riverside bar.
