The Experience

It’s astonishingly peaceful up on the third floor of this late 1600s building, updated in the mid 1800s; the history gets a page in Wikipedia. It originally housed the Hotel de Milan, whose architect Mazzini decorated the courtyard in decorative style; for years, tourists would flock to visit. Now you can peer down from your eyrie: a privileged view of a dark, dusty treasure. Nicolas, who also lives in the building, meets and greets – so hop in the lift or hike your way up to the top floor to be rewarded with a trio of studios in the bohemian heart of Lyon. Tiny, but flooded with light, each has been decorated in whites and greys, with numerous warm quirky touches, and fabulous sand-blasted timbers. All three can be rented on their own or together, each ideal for a couple. A decorative glass roof was added in the early 1900s as protection for the wraparound gallery you share; shuffle out here with a beer. Situated next to Place des Terreaux, with the Musée des Beaux Arts, the Opéra and the old quarter the shortest of strolls, and a great Japanese restaurant across the street, you could hardly be more enjoyably placed.

  • Climb the beautiful Fourvière Basilica (accessible by foot, funicular, or car) and savour the panoramic view of Lyon at the top. Afraid of heights? Hire a bicycle and soak up the views along the banks of the Rhône.
  • Explore the Beaux Arts museum for a wonderful collection of antiquity and contemporary art. A short walk away at Place des Terreaux. Visit the Confluence museum too for a fascinating journey through cultures, history and science – a must see.
  • Don’t miss out on the Festival of Lights, from 6-9 December 2018! Soak up the magical atmosphere with over 50 artistic light installations in Lyon’s buildings, streets, squares and parks by Lyon’s light designers. A fabulous spectacle, free & open to all.
  • Explore the gastronomic capital with more than 1,500 eateries in the city! From Bocuses’ renowned brasseries (le Nord, le Sud, l'Est and l'Ouest) to Café Comptoir Abel and Café des Fédérations for a delicious Lyonnaise experience. Try Chez Moss too.
  • The Paul Bocuse cookery school, which provides high-level training for future chefs and restaurant staff, is just up the road. The good news? They run classes for adults, too. More good news? You can stay chez Karine and walk to school every day.
