In winter you can ski cross-country, snow-walk or take the ski lift, 500m away, to the vast ski field of Les Arcs and La Plagne – known as the Paradiski. Best of all, this is more village than resort, authentically Savlie – and there are still plenty of nice little places for tea! Your friendly, sporty hosts have known the valley all their lives, have three adorable children and will be helpful with yours. They’re also passionate about good, organic, healthy ‘slow food’: sometimes the preparation of a meal takes all day and is cooked in the outdoor oven. View-filled bedrooms, not large, are traditionally dark-beamed and attractively furnishe; Jaune and Bleu, the double and the triple, share a great big balcony. There are cow bells and country tools, interesting old prints and pretty leaf stencilling, a sweet family sitting room downstairs (warmed by a roaring fire), and a dayroom with a fridge. Great value and with a deeply eco-friendly ethos: the owners’ concern for green issues permeates every aspect of the stay.
