Château de Moulin le Comte

Bed & Breakfast

Your welcoming hosts are keen to succeed in this enterprise: a spotless, well-renovated small château for B&B and elegant table d'hôtes

6 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 - 4

Huge tall windows, great big doors and a checker-tiled hall are original touches still on show in this small château, renovated recently and completely by the Van der Elsts. Your Belgian hosts – father, mother, son, recently moved from Brussels – are serious about succeeding in their new venture and you will excuse the wonderfully kitsch china chihuahuas when you are relaxing in one of their immaculate rooms. Expect textured wallpapers, swish showers, hotel standards and heaps of space; we particularly liked the Green Room for its original wooden polished floor and its garden view. Dinner in the elegant green and gold dining room might feature local watercress, colourful St Omer cauliflowers or veal with mustard, cooked by Francis who speaks seven languages, including Japanese! Nothing is too much trouble for your very welcoming hosts. The heritage site of Aire sur la Lys is a walk away, St Omer and war cemeteries are close, and the exciting new Louvre at Lens is a 45-minute drive. Great value for such an excellently run house.

Lovely place to stay. Interesting house, unusual furniture, good food and a warm welcome.

David, Bristol

Very warm welcome from Francis & Cedric, who have painstakingly restored this pretty house to be a small hotel. Bedrooms was spacious & immaculate. Breakfasts good (although coffee could be stronger)We dined in once - simple food well presented. Ideal quiet location from which to explore historic towns and WW1 & 11 sites.

Wonderful evenings stay at the Chateau, welcomed in person by Francis and Cedric, shown to our large family room, which was very comfortable and clean, with seperate adjoining room for the children. Dinner was marvellous and nothing was too much trouble .....we will be back!

What a wonderful warm welcome and such a wonderful place to stay. The room was of an extremely high standard and the Dinner in the evening and the breakfast were second to none. What a wonderful find, as seasoned travellers we shall certainly return and return and return.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Francis Van der Elst

  • Aire-sur-la-Lys is definitely worth visiting, by bike or on foot. It is a perfect base for trips to towns in the surrounding areas, such as Béthune, Saint-Omer, Lens, Arras and Lille. In less than an hour you are at the seaside.
  • The river Leie runs through its 25 acres large castle garden. The peace and quiet of the environment is one of its major assets.
  • You can join our table d’hôte, a delightful gastronomic experience. Enjoy an aperitif in our lounge or, if the weather is good, on the terrace.
