In a pretty little town on the banks of the Loire, this lovely hotel is casual, stylish and run with superb efficiency. Friendly, elegant Caroline bought the building five years ago and gave it a fabulous new look. With her flair for interior decoration she’s clearly had fun: ‘Sous la Lune’ has glittering stars, ‘Reflet’ has a floaty airy feel, while driftwood and pebbles adorn others, decorated in chalky colours. There are super bathrooms and many have views over the river or the handsome courtyard. Suites are big and mostly come with mezzanine sleeping areas, although access to one is up some tricky stairs – check before you go. In the large salon you’ll find comfy sofas, fresh flowers, lots of plants and a relaxed homey feel. In a long sunny room that gazes over the garden, on the second Sunday of the month, brunch includes heavenly terrine and sweet French treats from the local brocante market. Then off to explore narrow winding streets that take you up to the cliff face for stunning views. You’re well placed for cycling, gardens and châteaux, cocktails at the bar will tempt you back.
