The
Experience

Véronique, who paints, is loving settling into the medieval village, gleaning crockery and furniture from brocantes and her own grandparents to bring a new life and soul to this delightfully eclectic 15th-century house. On a road beside the Loire, it has direct sightings of swooping “sternes” (terns), an authentically ancient atmosphere, small bedrooms with huge personality and pretty showers, a splendid fireplace with its original bread oven in the dark beamed dining room – and masses of steps. Your cosmopolitan, polyglot hostess knows all the fascinating things to do and see here.

Reviews

This little chambre d'hôte was an absolute pleasure. Our bedroom and ensuite shower room were the most charming and tastefully decorated of our trip (though it was a very close run thing as Sawdays did us proud again!) The whole building was quirky and full of history and interesting brocante finds. Madame so obviously loves her house. She was charming and helpful and even encouraged our mistake-ridden French. We cannot recommend La Sterne too highly. We are already planning a return.

Margaret, Malmesbury

We had the warmest of welcomes from Veronique and Phillipe into their amazing B&B. It was lovely to be able to experiece a few nights in this beautifully and very authentically restored building. Everything was comfortable and of a very high standard from the beds, bathroom facilities and breakfast with homemade bread and cake. Both hosts were very generous with their time and were able to share lots of information on the local area includingplaces to visit and the best places to eat. we were only sorry that we only had time for two nights stay but would not hesitate to recommend La Sterne

Beverley

We were 6 cyclists on a weeks holiday. I had fallen for La Sterne on the website and it did not disappoint. The building is beautiful, a perfect mixture of original features with artistic and contemporary touches and lovely views over the Loire which was full after the floods. Apart from our rooms we had a whole living area to ourselves, came back in the evening to swallows and bats swooping above our heads and candles lighting the stairs to our room, we woke to eat a delicious breakfast in the courtyard outside. Veronique was just the loveliest of persons..........

Local points of interest from Véronique van Eetvelde

  • Two months a year, a "guinguette" (outdoor café) welcomes you on the Souzay island - just opposite the B&B -. Julien offers you a beautiful menu of local organic wines and beers, pies and salads. In the evening, local bands perform jazz and folk music.
  • I will be most happy to organise wine tastings for you in our various friends' cellars, in the village and around. In Montsoreau, Alain Bonnot organises wine tastings on his "toue cabanée" (a local boat) on the Loire or the Vienne river.
  • Souzay is a troglodite village. I shall be happy to let you know the nicest walking trails in the 'troglos', along Queen Margaret of Anjou's Manor, on the island, and in the Champigny vineyards uphill.
  • Close to Souzay, you will not miss Montsoreau, its beautiful castle with stunning views on the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne, its famous antiques market, and "La maison du Parc" with many insights on the nature reserve "Loire-Anjou-Touraine".
  • Cycling along the Loire is an amazing and magic experience. If you let me know in advance, I can provide you excellent bicycles for rent, in association with Veloc'Agis, a solidarity non profit organization in Saumur.
  • This is just a limited "avant-goût" of the many topics and good tips I will be happy to share with you (romantic castles to visit and not in the guides, excellent restaurants reasonably priced, local artists and craftsmen, etc.) Do not hesitate to ask me.
