The Experience

You’ll feel surrounded by beauty here in handsome reception rooms with intricate ‘boiseries’, stained glass windows and ceiling plaster moulding. Breakfasts are all organic: homemade smoothies, eggs, ham, avocado toast, pancakes, granola and madeleines. Take a seat afterwards in the drawing room, or have a wander around the landscaped park with its grotto, ornamental bridge, ancient trees, shrubberies and lawns.

The pool sits on a terrace below the château with views stretching over the countryside and a petanque court in the shade. Retire to warm and welcoming bedrooms with plump pillows, potted plants and a desk area; bathrooms are immaculate with organic soaps and fluffy towels. Young friendly staff look after you and there are light meals available at lunchtime and in the evenings.

Protected wetlands are a few minutes away for cycle and walking paths, and an island with a restaurant which you must get to by boat.

Accommodation

Reviews

This charming château, ideally situated on the outskirts of Angers yet in unspoilt countryside, has found a new lease of life after a chic redecoration by the new owner. It now has a very warm and laid-back ambiance thanks to the young and friendly staff. The bedrooms are warm and especially cosy and the views over the surrounding lowlands are memorable.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a five-minute drive or taxi ride into the centre of this fine old city with its Plantagenet history, cathedral, medieval streets, shops and restaurants. There are two magnificent châteaux 15 minutes away: Montgeoffroy and Brissac, packed with glorious interiors and history. The local wines are well worth hunting down: Savennières for Chenin Blanc and the Coteaux du Layon for dessert wine.

Introducing

Le Château des Forges

The château was a B&B for many years but was starting to look a bit tired. David Letellier, who owns a handful of other hotels and eco-lodges decided to buy it and engaged talented interior decorator/fashion designer Marion Derrien-Bonis to bring it up to date but retain and rework its 19th-century charm. You are looked after, beautifully, by manager Katell and his team of friendly staff.
