This 18th-century stone barn has been recently converted so all is sparkling and new, including the outside, but lots of planting will soften it in time. Owners David and Helen live in a cottage opposite and can bring you a continental breakfast in a basket: local bread, pastries and homemade jams or free-range eggs, local cheeses and charcuterie, homemade fresh fruit salad.
The kitchens are open-plan and have all the gear you need, with coffee to get you started, plus olive oil and vinegar in the cupboards. You’ll also find a welcome pack of goodies such as wine, fresh fruit, biscuits and crisps. A basket of logs waits by the wood-burner. Bedrooms are upstairs and have high, beamed ceilings with low windows looking onto the garden. Generous Italian showers, bath robes and fluffy towels add comfort.
Two market towns are within a 10-minute drive or ask your hosts about their favourite walks in the area – they’ll leave maps and guides for you.
