The Experience

You’ll feel nicely French spilling onto the terrace and pavement overlooking the lovely town square; or chatting to the barman who’s been making the drinks here for years. The renovated Art Deco dining room and pretty pool beside the river are charming spots to relax after a day exploring.

Bedrooms, named after famous racing car drivers, nod to the past. Come down to a continental spread for breakfast: boiled eggs, pastries and jam, cereals. Lunch and dinner are classic French bistro style: good value set lunches and evening meals eaten on the terrace or on formal, white tablecloths inside.

The châteaux of the Loire are an hour away; the dreamy valley has some fine historic buildings, including Le Lude with its glorious furniture and gardens. Vineyard tours in an eccentric pre-war bus can be arranged; bicycle trips or hot-air ballooning too.

Reviews

What a special and iconic place to be - whether it's sipping a coffee on the terrace looking out onto the square or beside the pool with a beer, this is a brilliant place to come to soak up the heritage and culture. Le Chartre is charming and a great base for exploring everything the region offers, and Sally and the team are just lovely.

Introducing

Sally Carpenter

Glorious old cars may no longer roar up to the door but the building's shiny history has been preserved by the current owners. Martin, an English classic-car enthusiast, fell in love with the hotel; bought and renovated it in 2013, and now he and his partner, Sally, run it with a small, friendly team.
