The Experience

Friendly Marie and François have excelled in restoring their luxurious, 18th-century château. Oak parquet is warm underfoot, copper leaf chandeliers light the circular hall and a stuffed fox surprises on the spiral staircase. Many rambling acres of green-fingered Eden await; take a wildlife walk or pluck cherries by the pool. Stylish shared spaces are immaculate with a baby grand in residence: Le Petit Bois has carved antique furniture; La Rotonde is marble grey with unusual panelling. Textiles and trimmings are sumptuous, bath robes fluffy; throw open the shutters and the views pour in. Stroll into Aizenay – or dine here.

Reviews

Marie-Helene and Francois are gracious hosts at this lovely Château in beautiful grounds. It’s a peaceful haven with a lovely pool, very comfortable rooms and great breakfasts. And very good value too!

Angela, Oxford

Francois and Marie combine the elegance of their home with warmth and kindness. We couldn't have asked for better hosts and we hope to return next year.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from François-Xavier & Marie-Hélène d’Halluin

  • Aizenay is in an ideal area for exploring the delightful Vendee coast, with its extensive sandy beaches, or inland, the Vendee bocage (the area of fields, hills and woods) with its many walking and cycling tracks.
  • The island of Noirmoutier is not far away (1 hour) nor the coastal towns of Bretignolles-sur-mer, St Gilles Criox de Vie and las Sables d’Olonne.(35 – 50 minutes).
  • The main town of the Vendee, La Roche sur Yon is about 15 minutes drive away and has many shops in the centre and outdoor commercial centres too. Its main attraction is the Haras, a national stud farm.
  • Further afield is la Chabotterie (30 minutes) – a museum in a large chateau with an interesting history, as well as the Historial de la Vendee, another museum.
  • A little bit further afield – about 1 hour to the North is Puy de Fou, the renowned historical theme park – a brilliant place for adults and children alike and with many wonderfully spectacular historical re-enactments.
  • Take the ferry at St Gilles to visit the lovely Yeu island. The journey takes just one hour. Rent a bike and go for a ride along the cosat and the many beaches.
