Deep in Western Loire countryside, a magical farmhouse with pool, garden, fresh flowers and generous Anglo-Scots family

An elegant country house in a peaceful, pastoral setting – who would not love it? The 18th-century farmhouse, complete with musket holes and open rafters, is informal and delightful. Your English/Scottish hosts are fun, friendly and intimately acquainted with France – they brought their children up here. Now they generously open their living space to guests, their serene pool and their exquisite Monet-style garden. Quietly stylish bedrooms (coir carpets, white walls, fresh flowers, silk flourishes) are divided by a sofa’d library on the landing. A gem.

We spent 5 nights here looking for a quiet end to our tour of north west France. We certainly found it! What an enchanting place in a rural setting with lovely gardens and an inviting pool where we could relax at the end of the day. Rick was the perfect host and welcomed us into his lovely restored home, which was an absolute delight. After our travels we sometimes just needed a snack at night, so we sat outside with Rick and other guests to enjoy an impromptu 'picnic' and chat over a glass or three of wine. A magical few days to round off our holiday.

Rick made us incredibly welcome, despite arriving late, both at his tranquil stunning home, and for the restaurant reservation he had to rearrange. Bella his jack russel was delightful welcoming us back every day with obligatory cuddles, the room was cosy and airy, comfortable and clean, white walls and bed linen, great shower with towels and wash cloths. The pool was clean and seating comfortable with pool towels provided, set in a beautiful garden. Nothing was too much trouble, from guidance on routes and places to visit, wine bucket on our lazy evening in. Highly recommend!!!

Adrian, Brighton

There is so much more to this delightful place than just bed and breakfast: Richard is a charming host; the guest’s wing is beautifully equipped, spacious and very comfortable; the pool is sparkly and inviting and the gardens are a delight. We could not have had a better start to our trip.

Vicki, Exmouth

La Frelonniére is excellent, from the light airy and tasteful rooms to the equally light buttery croissants and hilltop peaceful gardens, pool and herb garden. The farmhouse is book-filled and potpourri scented, while Julie's cooking is unsurpassed. (Disclaimer - Julie is a family friend, but even so we cannot recommend La Frelonniere highly enough). Unbelievable value for money and excellent ambience. NB: they only take cash, but it would cost more if they took cards - which would still be great value, in our opinion. Get in quick before they do!

Andy, London

A truly beautiful place, in a stunning area. The hospitality could not be improved and the food was exquisite. One night was definitely not enough, if you want to unwind this is the place for you. Many many thanks to Richard and Julie.

Matt, Exeter

We feel so lucky to have found la Frelonniere. Rick and Julie are the loveliest and most hospitable people you will ever meet, charisma personified! The house and gardens are stunning! I came away head filled with inspiration. We couldn't recommend it enough!

Shan, Ripon

Our recent stay at La Frelonniere reinforced to us what a special place it is! Julie & Rick, the hosts, are wonderful! They welcome you to their beautiful home like old friends. Julie's culinary skills are exceptional: serving imaginative & delicious dishes. Rick's pre & post supper conversation is highly entertaining & informative. We have stayed several times & hope to do so again very soon! Sue & Keith Cockayne, Jersey

This was my 6th visit. Every time is fantastic. I am amazed by the consistently high standards of accommodation, food and welcome. The house and gardens are amazing and hosts Rick and Julie make you and fellow guests feel like old friends. A really special place run by really special people. There cannot be a better place to stay!

What is the highest accolade we can give for La Frelonniaire? Everything was superb. Faultless!

This is the most amazing place. We had high expectations and were not disappointed! The house is stunning & in beautiful gardens. Rick & Julie are so welcoming, friendly and helpful. The evening meals Julie cooked for us were outstanding and it was great to sit and chat to the other guests. This really is a special place and we were very sad to leave.

We had a fabulous time. Julie and Rick were lovely and friendly. Our room was just delightful and overlooked a beautiful garden. Julie is a fantastic cook who presented the most inspired and delicious meals and Rick was a very charming host over pre-dinner drinks and he even helped us by suggesting lots of great trips to take. I would recommend La Frelonniere to anyone who wants a relaxing and friendly holiday and we'll certainly go back again.

The joy of Sawday's recommendations is that they are all consistently impressive. However, just occasionally, you come across a gem of a place which stands out for being exceptional in every respect. La Frelonniere is exactly that place. A haven of exquisite charm, beauty and warmth with consummate hosts in Richard and Julie. No where could be more lovely.

We spent a night at La Frolonniere in the Vendee and were delighted!

This is a beautiful property with wonderful accommodation within. The property itself has lovely gardens and a pool which is just what is needed on a hot day. Julie and Rick made us feel so welcome, with lovely food each evening and morning as well as excellent recommendations of places to visit. Just magical.

We had a fantastic stay with Julie and Rick. Their place is an oasis of natural beauty and quiet. The room was lovely and the homecooked food superb. We really felt at home and recommend this B&B highly.

What a slice of heaven! We were slightly sad only to be travelling through as the tranquillity was restful and the house and gardens, stunning. The boys were kept entertained with the beautiful pool. Julie and Rick obviously have an eye for detail, are beautifully creative with the design of their house and Julie is an amazingly talented chef. The meal was delicious - a really enjoyable evening off with the kids asleep upstairs. As hosts, they are highly attentive, meet your every need, are up for a drink and chat yet maintain a dignifed distance to give you space. Perfect!

A beautifully restored farmhouse (ask to see the photographs showing how this was done) set in stunning gardens with an excellent pool (much appreciated after a wearying journey). Our bedroom was immaculate, stylish and comfortable with elegant, modern en suite facilities. The evening meal, spent in the enjoyable company of fellow guests, was a tribute to Julie's skills and Richard's attention to detail, not least his selection of wine. We felt completely at home. A lovely place to stay.

We have just returned from a very last minute week away here with our two young children and can't recommend it highly enough. Julie and Richard are such exceptional hosts that we immediately felt as if we were staying with very old friends. Julie's cooking is superb and extremely good value -- we ate in every night. Richard's tips for days out, including punting on the Marais, swimming on the Ile de Re and a dusk visit to a local megalithic site, were all a success. Thankyou for making it such a relaxing week - we hope to return one day soon.

An absolutely delightful experience! We arrived after a nine hour journey and were immediately handed chilled white wine and taken to the out door pool. Things continued in this vein-,lovely food, superbly comfortable beds, gorgeous gardens and attentive kind hosts. I can't praise La Frelonniere enough and am determined to make a return visit.

Julie and Richard were charming hosts and made us feel very welcome in their lovely home. The house and garden are delightful, a quiet and peaceful place. We stayed for five nights and felt we had the advantage over other guests who were merely passing through. We did some gentle touring not too far afield, which was exactly what we wanted. Best of all perhaps was Julie’s cooking. We ate in every night, and the meals were some of the most enjoyable we have ever had. Julie’s skills would put many a professional chef to shame. Thank you for a most memorable holiday. – Clive and Irene

  • No visit to the West is complete without a trip to history-packed La Rochelle and the 'chic' Ile de Ré where you can rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Some of the best seafood restaurants in France will whet your tastebuds.
  • The gorgeous Vendée beaches are wide, sandy and well supervised for children. For the adults the oyster shacks at La Guittière will serve you opened oysters and a glass of chilled white wine at an unbeatable price.
