The
Experience

You can’t see another building from the garden of this traditional one-storey cottage, but you will see lots of sheep and pretty Connemara ponies in the surrounding fields – and you’ll hear cuckoos in spring. The river that meanders past the house is full of trout and salmon – Liam can organise fishing here or you can get a permit for Ballynahinch, some of the best freshwater fishing in Europe.Sunny days can be spent reading on a rustic bench by the river, walking to Lough Fadda (long lake) from the garden, pony trekking or cycling (Liam and Marion can organise bike hire and there is storage). The Wild Atlantic Way skims the coast so join it for as far as you want – it’s a rugged and bike-friendly landscape.Light the peat fire on chilly evenings and snuggle up indoors – there’s plenty of space for everyone to unwind. On warmer evenings get the barbecue going down by the river and have your supper outdoors at the big table.

Reviews

Cuach Cottage is a gem, set in the most beautiful Connemara countryside, the views of the Twelve Bens are ever-present and ever-changing. It's two years since we stayed here but that hasn't made the memories any less passionate. We love this house and hope to return again. Liam & Marian are perfect hosts and the house is welcoming, spick and span, great even on a bad day (important), comfy and cosy. As walkers and cyclists we explored the area in all directions returning exhausted, hungry and thirsty to lovely Cuach Cottage. It's a wonderful house for nature-lovers, a perfect paradise!

Location

The neighbourhood

The vibrant town of Clifden – the heart of Connemara – is only ten minutes away by car or an energetic 20 by bike. Find a pleasing range of shops and eateries in which to potter, plus a buzzing arts festival each September. If the landscape feels a little flat, drive to Diamond Hill in 25 minutes for a robust climb. The pretty fishing village of Cleggan, 16km north, is the departure point for day trips to the beautiful island of Inishbofin.

Local points of interest from Liam Young

  • Snugly located on " The Wild Atlantic Way " Cuach Cottage is consistently rated a 5 star self catering let with over 30 consecutive visitor reviews. the peace and tranquility will not disappoint, a perfect chill out zone, yet only 3 K from Clifden town.
  • The scenery surrounding our cottage is stunning with The 12 Ben's mountain range and it's ever changing play on light offering the budding artist a unique challenge. Alternatively just sit and rest awhile alongside our babbling river.
  • Of course we are also a fishing lodge with our own unique fresh water river for guests to enjoy. This river is recognised as as a Salmon and Trout run. Try your hand here, you will not be disappointed. License required for Salmon not so for Trout.
  • Activities, there are many to suit all ages. Our location is aptly suited for all outdoor activities. Exploring our many hidden secrets such as the ancient " Crannog " to be found on a lovely evening's 1 hour walk to Lough Fadda. Not to be missed !
  • There are many many places of interest within a short drive of Cuach Cottage. Connemara National Park adjoins our boundary and is home to Diamond Hill. Try Kylemore Abbey when there, a really lovely experience. Killary Fjord also within an easy drive.
  • We are of course located in a listed area of special conservation. The home of the Badger, Cormorant, Fox, Otter, Wild Hare, etc. Bird life / song abounds and the Cuckoo is a special visitor each year. Connemara ponies are plentiful it is their home !!

Introducing

Liam Young

Liam and Marian live in Wexford and this is their Connemara getaway, the setting for long holidays with their grown-up children and their families. The couple know and love the area and have good local connections, so they can make great suggestions for things to do and can sort out bike hire and delivery for your stay. If you need help, their friendly housekeeper who lives a mile down the road can come to your rescue.
