The Experience

The Mullions run a delightfully relaxed house; there’s no suggestion that everyone has to be up and out by a certain time but beautiful Connemara waits. There’s a huge stash of wellies, coats, life jackets and wetsuits, so borrow the currach, try your hand at fishing, hit sandy beaches, go riding…

Breakfast is a convivial affair (just ask if you’d like your own table) and your hosts happily give you a ‘full Irish’ plus ample supplies of fruit, good bread and homemade granola. There are fine restaurants nearby, but with a bit of notice you can have dinner here.

The Mullions can help you arrange outings, suggest restaurants and places to visit. Head back to read by the fire or stare contentedly out to sea through the huge windows while the yachts sail by.

Reviews

Delightful hosts, house, cuisine & area. Highly reccommended

Tanya, London

We were blown away by this incredibly special place and whole heartedly endorse the wonderful Mullion’s Old Store as champion of the best base to plan a visit to Connemara. Nothing disappoints. We were greeted with the warmest of welcomes into a unique spacious house, an inspiring piece of design in a fabulous location. Our bedroom was beautifully furnished, with every conceivable comfort luxurious bathroom, sea and mountains abound from all windows. Breakfast was relaxed and as late as we liked - beautifully cooked by Roderick. Just a minutes trot into the heart of lovely Roundstone.

Lovely spacious house with a stunning view from every window. We spent four beautiful days there and were welcomed with an outstanding hospitality. Perfect place for a relaxing city break.

Location

The neighbourhood

Buzzy Roundstone is a pretty fishing village with restaurants and shops within walking distance. You’re on the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal road in Europe which leads you through some amazing scenery. The sandy beach at Dogs Bay is a short drive away and 20 minutes sees you in Clifden, with more eateries and an annual arts festival. Take the short walk to local treasure O’Dowd’s Seafood Bar for fresh scallops, oysters and lobster.

Local points of interest from Roderick & Vivien Mullion

  • There are three or four good cafes and restaurants in the village, including the legendary O'Dowds Pub
  • In fine weather, St. Macdara's island, which has a 7th century oratory, is magical and can easily be reached by boat.
  • Back to back stunning white coral sand beaches of Dog's Bay and Gurteen are only a five-minute car journey away
  • Kylemore Abbey with its beautifully restored walled garden has a fascinating history
  • Lots of wonderful walks of varying grades - Connemara National Park including Diamond Hill - within easy reach
  • 10 minutes away there is fine-dining in Ballynahinch Castle Hotel which has some of the best views in Connemara.

Introducing

Roderick & Vivien Mullion

Roderick grew up in Ireland, and when he and Vivien lived in London this was their holiday home. In 2017 they took the plunge and moved back here full time, and they’re loving it. With four grown up children and nine grandchildren, this friendly couple has mastered the art of keeping guests of all ages very happy. Roderick loves growing veg, fishing and cooking – the best of all possible worlds for his lucky guests!
