Big beds, soft carpets, dreamy views of the Wicklow hills… and no need to head back to the village: Niamh’s farmhouse cooking is a treat

The country road narrows as you approach the house, dense moss covers stone ditches and the fields are strewn with sheep. But the best is yet to come: turn into the gate and you come face to face with the view, a magical hills-and-lakes panorama that changes by the minute. This early Victorian farmhouse, spruce in white with a scarlet front door and in the family for six generations, is now a warm, peaceful, hospitable B&B; there are also four holiday cottages on site. Niamh and husband Joe live right next door, never far away, and Niamh loves to cook; food is her passion. It would be a treat to have dinner in the romantic, candlelit dairy (meat, eggs, fruits, veg from the farm) or to book into a morning's bread-making class (great fun!). You can drive through 'Sally's Gap' in the Wicklow mountains, fish and boat on the lake, and meet the hens, ducks, pigs, sheep and donkeys: follow the farm trail, across the fields and down to the water. Guests have fresh, simple, spotless bedrooms to flop into at the end of the day, and breakfast is divine, a feast of fresh muffins and scones, fruit compotes and pancakes, farm eggs, bacon, jams, great coffee.
