The Experience

This is just the ticket for a big family or a group of friends to get together. There’s so much space you’ll never feel on top of one another: 10 sleep in the main house, with room for 9 more. Cook together in the huge kitchen, cosy with a wood-burner, or spill out onto the terrace for barbecues. The living room is vast and filled with books and CDs, there’s a full-sized billiard table and a big TV and the dining room seats 12 plus an extra 6.

The gardens are expansive too with a walled fruit garden and a badminton and boules lawn. Beyond are fields with sheep, a stream and a calming pond. All this is yours to wander at will – you’ll feel immensely private and privileged.

Walk along paths that criss-cross through woods, fish in the reservoir or try your luck at salmon fishing (permit required) in the river Lee, 10 minutes away. If you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to look after yourselves just ask Patricia and all can be organised.

This amazing house has the 'wow' factor as you walk in - a sweeping staircase, high ceilings and beautiful furnishings. Bedrooms and bathrooms are huge and there's plenty of space to spread out. It's the perfect place for celebrations - bring the whole family, there's enough to keep everyone entertained.

The neighbourhood

Farran Wood is just two miles from the house and a good place for walks or runs. You're 15 minutes from Cork, Ireland's second city, and 20 minutes from Blarney Castle. You're less than an hour by car from the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way. Patricia and John know their patch well and can help with suggestions and provide maps and routes for walks.

Local points of interest from Patricia Wiese & John Kehely

  • Farran wood: Once part of the estate of Farran House, is now a public forest park. 2 miles from the house, located on the banks of the iniscarra resevoir, there are miles of tracks and paths, Its great place for walking or jogging.
  • Water sports, sea fishing, swimming, golf, horse riding and much more can be found nearby.
  • We have croquet, badminton and boules sets for the lawn.
  • Kilcrea Castle and Friary are 1.5miles away. Built in the 15th century by Cormac MacCarthy, king of Munster (he also built nearby Blarney castle). They are remarkably well preserved and have an interesting history.
  • Whale and dolphin migratory paths pass through the waters off the West Cork Coastline. Whale watching excursions can be organised all year round except March, April, May.
  • As well as the championship sized billard table and the grand piano, the house is well stocked with books and board games.

Patricia Wiese & John Kehely

Patricia's family moved to Farran House when she was a teenager and her father took over the house and gardens in a terrible state. She and John spent five years making it habitable and have made many improvements since. They met at university where they were both rowers and have lived here for many years. They are warm, welcoming and clearly passionate about the house and its continuing restoration. They have three friendly rescue dogs.
